OAKLAND, Calif. - Two trustees at Oakland Unified School District are advocating to eliminate police from patrolling school campuses, saying these positions could be turned into "peace and culture keepers" and other less authoritative positions.
The context of the resolution comes as many in the nation are questioning the role of police, after a white officer killed a black man, George Floyd, by sitting on his neck in Minneapolis over Memorial Day. Calls to "defund" and reform police departments have been repeated throughout the country.
On Wednesday, Oakland Unified School board members Roseann Torres and Shanthi Gonzales will introduce a proposal to eliminate the district's police department. They want the OUSD police gone by Dec. 31.
Oakland PD is next.

Oakland is a city I once loved, where people got along before the Barry O bullshit.

I have never been comfortable with cops in the schools. Why? Because they don’t protect the students, they persecute them in my experience.

I agree. If every student went home to a family dinner with mom and dad every night, and then did homework with dad three times a week and went to church once a week with mom and dad, then police at schools are bored and useless.
Oakland is a beautiful city with beautiful churches, cool houses and sunny weather.
I hate the weather in the bay area. And I have heard nothing but bad about Oakland. But I don’t think we need cops in schools with children.
Robberies will shoot (pardon my use of this word, /sarc) through the ceiling and innocent kids will get killed by fellow student thugs/killers/drug dealers or by stray bullets from local gangs battles/drive-bys.
Oakland is a Marxist shithole, perhaps the worst city in the country. Nearly every mayor and many city council members have been communists/Marxists/racists, etc. including Ron Dellums, Jean Quan, I believe Loni Hancock or here husband were down there, etc.

It’s sad. Oakland has better weather than San Francisco. It can be a cold, foggy day in S.F., and Oakland is like Palm Springs. I know a couple Oakland cops, and it’s a very tough job. They have some stories. It’s insanity to talk about abolishing the Oakland P.D. or from removing it from the high schools where it has a presence. The problem is the high level of criminality among the black underclass. That criminality, not racism, is the root cause of the high level of engagement between the police and young black males. Removing the police presence won’t eliminate criminality. It will exacerbate it.
