The Minneapolis Police Department will withdraw from contract talks with the officer union as it seeks to end relationships that have eroded trust in the community and overhaul the force following George Floyds death, its chief said on Wednesday.
Chief Medaria Arradondo, at a media briefing, also said he would implement a new early-warning system to identify police officer misconduct, allowing supervisors to intervene more quickly to get problematic officers off the street.
The decision to cut off negotiations with the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis comes a few days after a majority of the city council pledged to dismantle the police force, raising pressure on the chief to take action.
What our city needs now more than ever is a pathway and a plan that provides hope, reassurance and actual measures of reform, Arradondo said. This work must be transformational but I must do it right.
He said he would bring in advisers to conduct a review of how the contract could be restructured for greater community transparency and more flexibility for true reform, adding that the main focus was not on wages and benefits.
This is further examining those significant matters that touch on such things as critical-incident protocol, our use of force, the significant role that supervisors play in this department."

Strike!
“Strike” -— So the city can see what abolishing the police force would really do.
Union busting s.o.b.s.
A city controlled by democrats for 50+ years
Far left mayor
Black police chief
Black DA
Police public unions support democrats 99-1
Democrats reward public unions with insane contracts and protections
Such theater...
Sounds like the chief is scared for his job.
I guess we have to swallow hard around here and root for the unions...strange days....
Police unions are often criticized, but they are usually the only group willing to defend officers when they are accused of misconduct. The city politicians, which includes the chief of police usually, are always willing to throw cops under the bus for any reason.
BTW, contrary to what some think, police unions will shut up and not defend a cop that they know is a bad cop. Nobody hates bad cops more than good cops.
Shut it all down!
Negative - it’s like the Eastern Front of the European Theatre in WW2. You find yourself sitting around hoping that somehow everyone involved loses.
The Minneapolis police unions vehemently defended Noor, the officer who shot Justine Damond. Sorry, no, they used to act as you describe but many police unions no longer do so and are just like any other union in protecting bad members.
So the people who live in the greater Minneapolis area get a say in this “transformational” act?, or is it just going to be decreed?
I know stupid question, why ask the folks that are going to be impacted by this decision.
I think they are getting what they voted for. Elect deranged leftist and you get what you deserve.
Blue Flu time.
Let’s game this out a little bit. The people who can do so say they plan on doing away with the police force. What happens next in real life? Police without much time in and still young will doubtless start looking for another job. So, write off about a third of the force, probably within the first 12 months. Those who are closer to or have the points to retire will do so, probably sooner than they had planned. Write off another 10 present. So, by the end of the year, they could be down forty percent from their current numbers.
Crime rates will climb because the police will not be able to hire replacements. The patrol job will get harder and more dangerous for those who remain. Some percentage of the remaining force are in support roles and/or not capable of performing patrols. The impact of just talking about defunding the police will be almost immediate and will be devastating.
These “public servants” are either idiots, or they have an anti-civilization mindset. Probably both are true.
I hate to say this, but the people of Minneapolis, like the people living in other liberal cesspools, get what they voted for.
I can pretty much guarantee that companies located there that can move away, will. The impact to tax payments and services will be impossible to avoid. The city has already entered a declining spiral.
Around and around the liberal cesspool churns. We are all being played.
The problem is they often defend cops that are clearly guilty of misconduct. And they negotiate contracts that prevent bad cops from being dealt with.
"BTW, contrary to what some think, police unions will shut up and not defend a cop that they know is a bad cop."
History says otherwise.
You are entitled to your opinion, but I think you are wrong.
OPC and Detroit arrives in Minneapolis.
Glad I don’t live there anymore.
Yup, stupid gets as stupid votes for and the denizens of mill city aren’t all that good at critical thinking about potential or likely outcomes.
