Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker defended himself Tuesday against Republican criticism that he was a social distancing hypocrite for appearing side by side with protesters at recent demonstrations.
"Im not going to run away from taking a stand at a historic inflection point involving race and law enforcement, the governor said.
Earlier Tuesday, the Illinois Republican Party used social media and news releases to rip Pritzker for appearing at protests in gatherings that exceeded the 10-person limit of the current phase of the governors reopening plan.
The governor flaunting his disregard for his own rules is a slap in the face to every Illinoisan who has been diligently following them, state GOP spokesman Joe Hackler said in a statement.
If the governor wants to show solidarity with protesters, his time is better spent on the phone with legislators trying to build a coalition for change. He could be calling an immediate special session. Instead, he poses for a photo-op while undermining whatever credibility he had left on his coronavirus restrictions, Hackler said.
Republican state Rep. Grant Wehrli of Naperville took to Twitter to criticize Pritzker as a two-faced politician who wants you to do as they say but do not take their own advice and flout the very laws they put in place.
Appearing at a news conference in Decatur, Pritzker acknowledged that people should still be social distancing and expressed concerns that there could be a resurgence of the coronavirus as a result of mass protests over the death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.

Governor Creosote is the worst in Illinois history. And that took some real effort.

He may have to take up two jail cells, when he inevitably joins all the other ex-Governors.
Its hard to figure which is worse, him or Groot.

Same goes for Whitmer and DeBlasio. Hypocrites all.
On a similar note, while King Cuomo shut down barbershops for ten weeks, his hair never got any longer or grayer.
He thought it was the buffet line.
That’s one picketing governor you have to give a wide berth to. He takes up half the street
Well, to be fair, there isn’t a mask big enough.
After 2 years of Pritzker, Blago must be saying to the public “how do you like me now!” Auctioning off a senate seat is kid stuff next to the economic devastation brought on by Pritzker.
Well, Pritzker’s edicts are for the little people. And Illinois’ Boss Hogg is most definitely not a little person.
