Racists are people who are obsessed with race.

Sound like anybody you know, Merriam?

“Racism” — see “White Supremacy”

It shall probably be a little more subtle than that, but there were looking to included the concepts “a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles” and “a political or social system founded on racism”, and also, “bring the idea of an asymmetrical power structure into the language of the definition”.

Oh, the propagandists and wordsmiths can be very clever.

Dictionaries stopped being reliable in the early sixties, when Webster’s 2nd Unabridged was chucked and replaced with Webster’s 3rd Unabridged. They stopped being descriptive of the language at that point.

I have old dictionaries.

Same here. My 'new' (40 years young) Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary is one of my stand-bys, known in its day for its prescriptionism...

...along with a forty-year-old Random House Unabridged (not so prescriptive, but thorough), also a sturdy and reliable American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language....

...plus the great and grave Webster's 2nd New International, and finally the fascinating if relatively unused OED.

My toys have held up somewhat better than the world around them.

racism
A term that used to mean prejudice towards one or more races.

In modern use, this word is used by people to explain the behaviour of people of other races, whether race is called into the issue or not.

Also: racism can now also include having good race relations. If you try to be friends with someone of a different race, someone will call you a racist.
Me: Dude I met this black guy when I was...

Idiot: RACIST!

Me: How is that racism? I was going to say that I met this black dude when I was going to see my best friend, who's asian.

Idiot: You're just friends with that asian because you think that makes you a good person for not being racist! You must feel sorry for him, you goddamn racist!

Me: Race doesn't come into it. But people like you force race issues into everything.

From the article:

“Peter Sokolowski, an editor at large at Merriam-Webster, told CNN that their entry also defines racism as “a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles” and “a political or social system founded on racism,” which would cover systematic racism and oppression.”

So the new definition defines racism using the word racism in the definition.

Now how can racism be a “political program”? I’m guessing they are talking about the word “racist” not “racism”.

Here’s my question: it seems like the left’s PC cops are now *requiring* us to include a race qualifier in every conversation.
Why is that?
Why *must* we say “this black guy I know”?
Why not just “this guy I know”?

Hope it does not fall overboard from my houseboat.

So if a hurricane hits, what will you save, your books or your firearms? Tough decision.

In the inner city neighborhoods from which I fled years ago, my black neighbors constantly railed against the “gooks” the “jews & a-rabs” and the “beaners” who were taking over their neighborhoods.
They mostly seemed to hate everyone & believed everyone else was jumping ahead in the line for
benefits.
I never really heard derogatory terms about white people— probably because they knew I could hear them, but also I guess they assumed I was ok with the other slurs they *did* use in front of me.

The whole racial dynamic in the ‘hood was NOTHING like the guilty white liberals in Hollywood believe.
