The best ones had a strong magnet on the side, so you could attach it to a refrigerator or an iron pipe. I preferred Eveready to Ray-O-Vac.

Same here. I have a Surefire LED flashlight with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that is brighter than the headlights on my car.
There should be a new name for it, for all it resembles the unreliable and dim “flashlights” of my youth.

...leaking dead ray-o-vacs...They've been making carbon-zinc and alkaline cells since the late 19th century and they STILL can't make 'em so they don't leak.
But as bad as they are, at least they don't explode.
