Self-driving cars won't eradicate the car crash, study says

While self-driving cars won't get distracted or drive drunk, that only accounts for a third of wrecks that occur, according to the insurance industry. In a blow to hopes for a future free of car crashes with the coming of self-driving cars, a study released Thursday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows totally driverless cars would have a difficult time achieving such a goal.

The IIHS looked at more than 5,000 police-reported crashes from the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, which the insurance industry-funded group said represents vehicle crashes that resulted in one car towed and required emergency medical services.

I just bought one of those Subaru Outbacks and I noticed that when it gets out on the highway, it just wants to drive itself. You push a button on the steering wheel and the car keeps itself between the lines and stays a certain distance behind the car in front. Also, it automatically brakes itself if you are dumb enough to want to try and back into something.

This is how cars will eventually self-drive themselves. A little at a time. Eventually, they will take the whole driving experience over and we'll be sitting in the driver's seat reading a book and sipping on a glass of wine.

Many things deliberately avoided in the article.

Self driving cars, if allowed to, continuously improve their driving skills and are likely to be much better than humans in most situations.

It is in the interest of insurance companies to *not* reduce accidents. Less accidents mean lower premiums. The insurance companies get a cut of the premiums.

They should also have an on board voice synthesizer with a William Daniels option.

Knight Rider-ish.

I just bought a car that is sorta self driving. If you turn on cruise control and lane control it will keep you a safe distance from the car in front and keeps you centered in your lane.

It scares the heck out of me to use it. I don’t trust it.

Fewer payouts means fewer expenses. Insurance companies are okay with fewer payouts.

Cars won’t self drive they will be totalitarian government driven. You will go where you are allowed when you are allowed.

Yes, self-driving cars will come. But I’m 70 and I doubt I’ll see the day. In your case I still couldn’t relax and I don’t think I’d have my hands more than an inch away from the wheel and my feet very far from the brake pedal.

Just imagine, you were intending to go to work and the car delivers you to the police station for the wrong think you tweeted the night before.

” IIHS says self-driving cars will need to feature programs that can in no way conflict with safety and law protocols”

which means any kind of out of the ordinary event in which an unexpected obstruction of the road occurs, SDC’s would simply have to freeze in place because going outside the lines would conflict with safety and law protocols ... minimum speed limits would be a problem too in case of bad weather, local flooding and road obstruction ... i also see a problem merging with high-speed traffic, oh, and about a gazillion other similar problems, and that’s just related to the requirements for absolute slavish observance of all safety and law protocols ...
