Could reform be the answer to the dilemma that China faces? That's certainly the option the foreign policy gurus at Foggy Bottom would suggest. It sounds ever so logical to them. But not to the Chinese communist leadership. They may be evil to the core, but they're not fools. By attempting to reform and loosening up control, the CCP rightly fears what is known as the Tocqueville Paradox.
Minxin Pei states:
The Chinese leadership, especially Vice President Wang Qishan, piqued interest in Tocqueville because he read L'Ancien Regime, and warned fellow cadres that reform could speed up the demise of the system itself. This is why Chinese leaders like Wang read Tocqueville: They are aware of the risks embedded in reforming a very rigid, brittle system.Accordingly, the CCP believes it cannot reform the Chinese economy and financial system without being consumed by its own population. Given this mindset, it is clear that no meaningful trade agreement between the China and the U.S. is possible. That's because the U.S. demands are premised on China opening up, and the Chinese leadership firmly believes it could not survive that. The Chinese may agree to this or that on trade, but it's all a lie. They have no intention to living up to any deal. To believe otherwise is beyond foolish.Historically, the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party is also informed by the Gorbachev experience. They blame the collapse of the Soviet Union on Gorbachev, not on more fundamental causes that preceded him. So, they're informed, in many ways, by this phenomenon identified by Tocqueville, that a bad system is at its most perilous moment when it tries to be better.

Could reform be the answer to the dilemma that China faces?
>>>>>
What dilemma?
Communist China is looking at the example of the former Soviet Union, and see “reform” as the way to rapid demise.
The fact is, the former Soviet Union was forced into bankruptcy because of their inability to maintain parity with the US in military buildup, and simply exceeded their capabilities. The Chinese are a little more crafty, but again, they are ramping up their military close to the limit of what their economy can stand, especially in light of the really severe sanctions and tariffs that Trump has imposed upon them. Reform or not, the Chinese Communist regime is dangerously close to toppling into the abyss, considering the very bad press they are getting from the rest of the world, and Americans are well advised to move as much production of essential goods and services back onshore with all possible alacrity. Our own economic health depends on it.
Better headline; “China CCP CANNOT REFORM, regime is too brittle”!
They, the CCP, are the dinosaurs and they are sitting on top of a pressure cooker. This is a DEADLY DANGER to the world. They must continue to be aggressive and challenging to keep the facade intact and their population quiet. Think of a cornered & wounded animal!
Took a quick look at the article. Now I understand why the ChiComs have declared war against not their own people but also against the whole war via the unleashing of this biological weapon called the Wuhan virus.
Please see post 6.
Eggzackly.
Their current actions with Hong Kong are not a show of strength. It is a sign of their weakness. They are in a precarious position.
CCP. Democrat. Republican.
None of them will change to make it easier on the common person. For the same reason: It weakens the concentrated power.
You are better off voting for someone you know nothing about—the chances of them being corrupt are less than incumbent. It doesn’t matter which party the incumbent is in. If they have been there for any amount of time they should be voted out.
China, DC...is there really a lot of difference when it comes to a desire to retain power?
I’d say obama and Trump are 180 degree out from each other so yes; it does matter. We don’t want to go back down that dark path of the obama years.
China has too many males versus females in the reproductive age group. When this happens war is inevitable.
BTW, do you have any sources where one might study this phenomenon (too many males leading to war) in greater detail.
Perfect time for them to make a move on Taiwan.
Existential enemies.
