WASHINGTON (AP) — A divided Supreme Court on Friday rejected an emergency appeal by a California church that challenged state limits on attendance at worship services that have been imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Over the dissent of the four more conservative justices, Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court's four liberals in turning away a request from the South Bay United Pentecostal Church in Chula Vista, California, in the San Diego area.

Credit where credit is due... Ann Coulter may be a bit (or even more than a bit) crazy now, but I remember that she was one of the few who was (correctly) skeptical of Roberts 15 years ago. “Roberts would have been a fine candidate for a Senate in Democratic hands. But now we have 55 Republican seats in the Senate and the vice president to cast a deciding vote — and Son of Read-My-Lips gives us another ideological blind date”

Well, since they can’t go to church, I suggest they go burn down their downtown. Apparently that’s allowed everywhere.

Just remember as the country burns down, the higher up political left is very concerned mostly about the court and not a tragic police incident. The DNC could taste the presidency and the Supreme Court and Trump took what they thought was theirs.

The first amendment doesn’t grant rights, it shackles the federal government from infringing on those rights. Were Scalia alive today, he would have properly roasted the court for referring to religious services as ‘social events’. This isn’t a knitting circle meeting, this is a religious congregation.

But there was one huge problem with the court case; it was an attempt to preemptively prevent the state from taking action.

Which I think was the wrong argument. And the wrong method; the county of San Diego or the city of Chula Vista needs to take action first, and without that persecution, it becomes a regulatory question.

It is lumped with the same question that might be made about a church that is closed down due to, say, the building falling apart. In that consideration, it seems a rational reach of regulation for public safety.

Citing church leaders for hosting an event of more than 100 people (or 1/4 of the capacity, whatever is lessor,) that would lead to other questions: Does a church present greater dangers than an airplane? A train? A bus? A Walmart? Are they not being given exactly the same consideration, or are they being treated as a lessor?

Too easy of an out for Roberts. I think if the proper question gets before him, a lot of this goes away.

If the Chief Justice is being blackmailed, why doesn’t he do the honorable thing and simply resign?
At this point the only logical inference we can draw is that he’s required by his extortionists to stay in office and do their bidding. Guess his crimes must exceed the generally assumed transgression of some adoption irregularity in Ireland. Any normal man would just take a bath and face the music unless the consequences would be so devastating they would destroy life. Wouldn’t you stand up like a modern Sampson and bring down the temple of your tormentors? Exposing blackmailers has got to be satisfying unless you’re so desperately craven as to be incapable of letting go your powerful position; or...

I believe you answered your own question. He has no honor. Along with no decency and no principles.

Roberts is corrupt and compromised. Bought and blackmailed by the DS due to his family issues.

No one wants to see it, or acknowledge it.

That is actually a very correct statement; it’s called “Not Legislating From The Bench”. Probably the ONLY thing correct from him since being elevated to SCOTUS.

The courts will just rule that street thugs, rampaging Antifa and jihadi Muslims are “more equal” than the deplorables who go to church.

I’ll just add. I’m worshiping as I wish and if we all do....arrest us all.

There isn’t enough DS to arrest us.

Especially, during the new crap.

This should have been an easy 9-0 decision. The first amendment is dead. People can riot in the street loot rob steal burn down a city, but you can’t attend a Church service. The left wing has destroyed congress, attempted a coup on the President, destroyed the rule of law. So now America belongs to the lawless? The police will arrest a mother for taking her daughter to a park but arrest nobody while they burn down a city and loot businesses? We are not far away from the bullets flying and a reset to reestablish the founding constitution, or it will simply all go up in flames.

Impeaching Roberts won’t matter as soon as Ruth Bader Ginsberg dies and Trump appoints her replacement during his second presidential term. That will give us a conservative 5-4 minority. Best of all, Trump has a good chance to replace Breyer as well. We could easily see a 6-3 SCOTUS before Trump leaves office.

Tired of winning yet?

But yes, Roberts has been a disaster. I don’t know why, but I expected more from globalist country-club new-world-order fan GW Bush. In hind sight, I don’t know why I expect Bush to appoint a right leaning jurist.

If the regs don’t single out churches, then there’s no federal issue involved.

If only a mosque had brought the lawsuit, there would have been a 9-0 vote upholding the 1st Amendment.

[[If the Chief Justice is being blackmailed, why doesn’t he do the honorable thing and simply resign?]]

The left will out him if he does- he’s more useful to the left on the court voting in their favor, so they likely have threatened to expose him if he tries to quit
