And the Southerners had a least a chance. All they had to do to win was convince the North that South wasn’t worth fighting for. Yes, the Southerners forgot that most Northerners at the time were farm boys too, just as used to the outdoor life as the Southerners were.

But a race war? 13% of the population against the rest? Not just 13%, but an easily recognizable 13%? Burning their own neighborhoods is one thing, going in to burn and loot in non-black neighborhoods would be quite a different matter. The locals would fight back.
