Trump warns North Carolina governor the clock's ticking on a GOP convention guarantee

President Trump warned on Tuesday that North Carolina's governor has "a week" to figure out if the Republicans' presidential nominating convention can be held in Charlotte this summer, as other states offered to hold the gathering instead.

But Gov. Roy Cooper says he’s waiting for the Republican National Committee “to present to us in writing their proposals” on how they plan to hold their presidential convention amid the coronavirus pandemic before he can guarantee that the August convention can be held at “full attendance” as demanded by the president.

Cooper, a Democrat, spoke the day after the president threatened to move the massive quadrennial event from North Carolina if Cooper couldn’t “immediately” tell convention planners whether or not the downtown arena in Charlotte “will be allowed to be fully occupied.” And he spoke hours after the Republican governors of Georgia and Florida offered their states up as the site to host the convention if Trump follows through on his threat to move the confab.

Hours after Cooper made his comments during a daily coronavirus news conference, the president said "we don’t have much time"and that "we need a fast decision from the governor."

"I would say within a week, certainly we’d have to know. And if he can’t do it, if he feels he can’t do it, all he has to do is tell us and then we’ll pick another location, and I will tell you, a lot of locations want it," Trump added as he answered a question from Fox News' White House correspondent John Roberts.

But hours earlier Cooper explained, “We’ve been in talks with the RNC about the kind of convention that they would need to run and the kind of options that we need on the table...

Hurricane season a negative for FL. DeSantis has run it well making it safer. GA and AZ both going purple. Political dividends with ATL (2 senators to keep and a flippable House seat) or Phoenix (McSally to keep and two House seats in play).

“ I don’t even understand why they picked Charlotte in the first place.”

Because Trump wants to win NC.

Roy Cooper has yet to figure out the the President is “negotiating” with his knee on Cooper’s chest and his knife at Cooper’s throat.

At this point, whether the convention is held in Charlotte, NC or in a different state, Copper and the NC DildoCrats are the big time losers.

Yes, we’d be perfect here in North Florida: Great beaches and a steady gentle breeze off the St John’s, big convention center, stadium, hotels, restaurants, good easy to reach airport, lots of military (mostly Navy) installations - meaning supportive folk - and a relatively safe city. Assuming you stay out of the usual drug-infested part of town, of course, but people who’d go there probably wouldn’t be attending the GOP convention in the first place!

>>>Just have it in Florida.

This could complicate things. Everyone traveling from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Louisiana must self-isolate or self-quarantine for 14 days, or for however long they will remain in the state if it’s shorter, per executive orders from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Just have everyone coming in for the convention tested upon arrival and have some events in an outside stadium!

“But hours earlier Cooper explained, “We’ve been in talks with the RNC about the kind of convention that they would need to run and the kind of options that we need on the table. We’re talking about something that’s going to happen three months from now and we don’t know what our situation is going to be regarding COVID-19 in North Carolina.””

this sounds to me like President Trump has got his answer: so onward to Florida, Georgia or Texas!

what’s the point of holding it in charlotte if the cooper refuses to let them use the convention center?

Simple, poke NC in the eye and move the convention 200 miles south to Charleston, South Carolina.

Gee, how many other cities were competing with Charlotte for the convention?

one, two?

Idle threat, and if I could get out of hosting this boon-doggle, I’d jump at the opportunity.

Convention ain’t going nowhere.

Trump must do everything possible so that the blame for the economic damage moving the convention does to Charlotte businesses falls directly on the governor — as it must and as all the economic damage caused by the deliberate lockdown of the state should.

"Jump through my hoops and I'll think about it?"

We had an employee try this when we asked her to come back to work after the DemPanic restrictions were eased. Strangely enough, now there simply aren't enough hours available to schedule her. Funny how that happens. :)
