Earlier this spring, as Washington began to pay out enhanced unemployment benefits to tens of thousands of laid-off and furloughed workers, a criminal organization halfway around the world spied an enormous opportunity.
A Nigerian fraud ring, dubbed “Scattered Canary” by security researchers, would soon begin siphoning off the benefits, notably the extra $600 a week Congress had added to unemployment checks.
Hiding behind a tsunami of legitimate claims, and using personal information likely stolen in past consumer data breaches, the ring and other criminals filed thousands of bogus applications with the state’s Employment Security Department (ESD). By the time the fraud was recognized, scammers had made off with “hundreds of millions of dollars,” ESD Commissioner Suzi LeVine acknowledged Thursday.
Exactly how much was carted off by Scattered Canary, as well as other bad actors, hasn’t been determined.

It seems to me that the only way Nigerians could run this scam AND access the money would be to have money sent to overseas banks.
Is there nothing in the system that flags out-of-state, and especially, overseas bank accounts?
Remember also that designers of welfare systems are opting for maximum, not minimum usage. Their bureaucratic and political self-interest depends on it.

We are too stupid to run a country. How many crooks, both foreign & domestic, cash Social Security checks for people who died years ago? How many of them are still voting Democrat in every election? How hard is it to find who died every year and remove their names from all government payments?
Several days after it was completed, it was announced that local hospitals had dozens of empty beds, and they were actually laying off medical staff.
Less than a week after the military finished the job, they came back and completely dismantled it!

I signed up for and am receiving benefits from California EDD. All the benefits go on a BofA prepaid card but the card is mailed to you. A few other things come in the mail from EDD too. How could they not flag cards going out of the country?
I forgot to mention another corruption scheme going on in Washington state...
A couple days ago, the state Director of Health Statistics ordered her staff to retrospectively examine all death certificates since 01 January 2020 for signs of flu like symptoms, and to change the cause of death to “presumed COVID-19” wherever necessary.
The Director predicted that up to 3,000 COVID deaths may have been overlooked.
Unless they have someone here at multiple addresses to receive the cards. But even then why wouldn’t you flag an address that was b ing used say 5 or even 10 times. Sounds to me like incompetence......like every other government program.
A program like this should be managed by a contractor like Visa or one of the big insurance companies. They have the data base and fraud detection to handle it.
How much of this fraudulent scam has ended up in DNC coffers?
