Under the National Defense Production Act, a duly enacted Federal law that has been on the books for nearly 70 years, Trump can designate any business in the country as essential and order that it remain open.

My understanding is that in just about every state churches are open and allowed to meet but the number of people who can attend is restricted. That's state orders. I don't think Trump has the authority to overrule that.

You understand wrong. There are no churches open in many states. Tucker Carlson just had a Catholic priest on who was suing the Governor of New Jersey.
