“We are going to put out the fires. We’re not going to close the country,” Trump said. “We can put out the fires. Whether it is an ember or a flame, we are going to put it out. But we are not closing our country.”

What does that even mean?

If Covid flares up in the fall then there is nothing to do but ride it out. States are not going to shut down again. Any governor who did so absent another federal disaster proclamation, which there won't be one, would be ridden out of the state on a rail. They'll have no cover from Trump and no help from the federal government and definitely no support from their people.

With adequate testing available, there’s no reason to shut the whole country down.

There is going to be enormous pressure on governors when there are spikes in infections and deaths from the virus. To Republican governors, the media will be screaming about them not caring about people dying.

We’re already seeing the beginnings of that narrative play out in Georgia and Florida, where GOP governors have to face stories every day about how “dangerous” their actions are.

For Trump, it plays into his re-election campaign. With the stock market booming this past week on promising news of a vaccine, the economy has a real chance of roaring back to life. While Biden sits in his basement conducting a virtual campaign, Trump has already begun to hit the trail. Soon, his signature rallies will begin and the battle will be joined in earnest.

When will PDJT lift the federal disaster proclamation? It gives hime some power, but it seems to give the governors almost dictatorial power.

I’m in MA. and a caller to our morning radio talk show said that he was amazed at how willingly the people in this state have been with Baker’s shutdown. He’s got an 80% approval rate and feels free to do whatever he damn well pleases. He’ll shut this state down in a minute. Oh, wait, it’s pretty much all shut down already.

I hope and pray you are right.

Never underestimate fearful and cowardly actions though.

That's exactly right. In addition ALL hospitals know what to do. There are tons of ventilators and PPE...and testing is so fast now that any outbreak can be quickly traced and contained. It's not like it was 3 months ago. Donald Trump did a great job shutting things down to make sure that there wouldn't be a ton of deaths AND to make sure we're equipped for the future.
