The way most everyone selects, applies/fit tests, wears and/or maintains a mask renders the face/identity cover no more effective than carrying a handkerchief in your back pocket. And without fitted goggles to protect the eyes the wearer is completely unprotected. Your contention that China is responsible for this scientific and practical reality is inane ... it’s the users of the masks who are responsible for the failure of their personal protective equipment to effectively serve its intended purpose.
I hate that he announces what he will do. Now DEMS will ensure that 2nd round occurs. But I’m positive a 2nd wave will occur around election time anyways on purpose.
The current mask-wearing fad is, in fact, a “big deal” as it serves as an incessant reminder that we are but a cough away from certain death. And if you think that opposition to continuing the elevated level of irrational fear that continues long after the Chinese virus has peaked is “childish”, then you and I have a much different perspective of responsible behavior.
I’m in MA. and a caller to our morning radio talk show said that he was amazed at how willingly the people in this state have been with Baker’s shutdown. He’s got an 80% approval rate and feels free to do whatever he damn well pleases. He’ll shut this state down in a minute. Oh, wait, it’s pretty much all shut down already.
The President has shown excellent leadership throughout this thing, but he indulged the hysteria for a little too long.
Apparently the vast majority of Americans like the government to tell them what to do?
As well as spending massive amounts of tax payers money on the latest crisis dejour.
We’ll see if they prefer a life long politician, who actually has done nothing of note in his half a century in public office, for President.
Compared to a Trump..who has actually done things...and until this virus non-sense had America running like a well tuned clock.
Never underestimate fearful and cowardly actions though.
Likewise. I simply do NOT understand the rabid antipathy some people display. It is completely irrational to the verge of childishness.
I dont see that where I am. It is the people NOT wearing masks that get the dirty looks around here. There are hyper mask wearers who wear it even in their cars and when they arent close to anyone. Many of us leave it off as much as we can and only put it on at the last minute when going into the store or getting close to people. Then we take it off right away as soon as we leave the store and are a safe distance walking to our car. And we dont wear it at all in our cars, our around our yards or with our own family. That is when we get the dirty looks and comments from the hyper mask wearers.
Some of them were probably germaphobes to begin with.
I reluctantly wear the mask in the store because its required and its no big deal and I dont want people to feel uncomfortable.
But to be honest I dont think it is a good idea - the only people in my town who have tested positive are health workers who wore masks religiously and they still got it from where they work. Nobody else I know got it anywhere except if they work at a hospital. They are all better now and have the antibodies.
I think stopping this virus is like trying to stop the common cold from spreading - impossible. So our only hope is everyone young and healthy getting exposed and building an immunity - it will happen sooner or later anyway - and the masks and social distancing are just prolonging it.
The only exception is the very old and the very sick - we should stay away from them for a while and wear masks to try and protect them.
The response to this has been disasterous on all levels, including Federal.
I agree.
It is something no one saw coming. Even those that were paid to plan for the unseen. But overall it is not as if we are at war and our infrastructure has been destroyed.
It is tragedy for those that lost loved ones, and those that lost their businesses, and those that lost their jobs (all that goes with those things). But America is still strong, and Americans will respond liked they have after every emergency. They will roll up their sleeves and get back to work.
You are only addressing half the effectiveness of masks...the protection of the wearer. Far MORE effective and more important is the protection of OTHER PEOPLE from asymptomatic or “early effective” infectees “if” they also wear masks. Wearing or not wearing glasses affects the latter purpose not at all, and, in fact obviates the need for mask wearees to do so.
So, your psychological foibles are more important than other peoples lives??
"And if you think that opposition to continuing the elevated level of irrational fear that continues long after the Chinese virus has peaked is childish, then you and I have a much different perspective of responsible behavior."
The "peak" may indeed have passed...data shows that it has, but the virus is still killing almost 1500 Americans PER DAY, and we will pass 100,000 dead by the end of May. The decrease in slope is NOT happening quickly. So not wearing a mask if you have them available IS irresponsible behavior.
And the virus is still killing 1500 Americans PER DAY. Wearing a mask is a simple, effective, and cheap thing that can be done to protect other people.
Yes Mr. Fauci this virus is in 200 countries and its not going to disappear anytime soon
That makes it quite unlike SARS Cov -1. in 2003 which did disappear
completely. As did EBOLA ; WEST NILE ; And others
Then theres measles and all the other ones
The bottom line is : combat all viruses and bacteria using your best methodologies! Hint. Ag+. Zn.
Given how Coronaviruses are, we are stuck with them for good. However, its likely that we will see plenty of more mild strains at the same time.
Your point as to protection against transmitting the virus can be achieved just as effectively with proper use of a handkerchief or a tissue. And because you think that no matter how you select, apply/fit test, wear and maintain a mask has no affect on its effectiveness as to acquiring the virus (though you seem to have implicitly acknowledge that without fitted goggles the mask-wearer is not protected), the mask-wearer is completely protected whether you wear a mask or not.
My point of all of this is not just to correct widely promoted fiction about the effectiveness of wearing face coverings (although wearing a scarf is not worth even a second of consideration), but to stress that the cost to society by everyone hiding their face -- their very identity -- in public, a practice as dehumanizing and as anti-social as is a burka in those oppressive countries of the Middle East, is not worth the infinitesimal benefit to be derived from improper mask-wearing. Cheers!
I posted the science. You've posted nothing.
Nobody is talking about absolute protection, which doesn't exist for ANY PPE.
I've worked with many an "environmental health and safety professional" during my stint as a scientist in the chemical industry, in fact developing instrumentation they would later use for personnel and area monitoring.
ALL of them were very knowledgeable about the regulations they oversaw. Few of them understood the science behind those regulation.
I know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.
Understood. Many thanks for responding.
