bout 10,000 residents have been evacuated in the US state of Michigan after two dams breached following days of heavy rain, officials say.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for areas near the Tittabawassee River after the Edenville and Sanford dams failed.
Parts of Midland, a city some 140 miles (209 km) of Detroit, could be under 9ft (2.7m) of water, authorities said.
Dow chemical company, which is based in the city, has set up emergency steps.
The Edenville dam collapsed on Tuesday. As of Wednesday morning, the Sanford dam remains intact, but floodwaters have been flowing over it. ...

Gee, maybe there was something else for Whitmer to focus on besides protesters.
An INVESTIGATION needs to be done on WHITMER’S lack of leadership concerning the breached dams.
Why didn’t Gov. Whitmer plan for this... A dereliction of duty! First, the pandemic and now floods!!! When does the pestilence and locusts arrive?
Michigan does not seem to be well-run. Perhaps the voters should vote differently.
Is she telling residents downstream to stay in their homes?
If Whitmer were a republican, she would be blamed for the flood, like Bush. But now we will blame Trump for not getting her the billions she needs to bailout her state.
Yes, we're still in lockdown, and put on those masks.
Solid Americans. They need our help.
“Built in 1924, the Edenville Dam was rated in unsatisfactory condition by the state in 2018 while the Sanford Dam, which was built in 1925, was given a fair condition rating, the Associated Press news agency reports. It said both dams were in the process of being sold.”
“Michigan does not seem to be well-run. Perhaps the voters should vote differently.”
Now that’s funny.
I consider myself at least a half-A geography guy. But the Tittabawassee River is a new one on me. I wonder if the locals call it the Titty-B or some such.
Dow Chemical has been on both sides of the Tittabawassee since it was founded. The sediment in that river is full of PCBs, dioxins, and other lovelies. I feel sorry for the people getting that junk all over their town.
Yikes — reminds me of when I lived near Niagara Falls 1968-71...
NIAGARA FALLS......Slowly I turned........
....step by step...
....inch by inch...
Update:
100,000+ displaced.
38+ miles of Tittabawassee River impacted.
The neighborhoods south and west of me are empty but no vast expanses of water.
No one can leave Midland to the South or West.
Sturgeon Creek is very wet but not over the roads.
My house is about 10 feet above the current forecasted crest.
NOAA: Crest is at 38 feet around 4pm today.
Re-crosses flood level (reverse) at circa midnight Friday.
My employer, the World Leader of Industrial Chemical Products, is shut-in safe.
The nearby power generation plant is powering down now.
The plant gets “wet feet” at 35 feet (now).
My biggest worry is our secondary containment system.
The Titt
Now shes got a real disaster to deal with. Maybe she will ease up on other things as she copes with a real crisis and nit a manufactured one.
Please, don’t spread bad information from ignorance.
Your statement, “that river is full of PCBs, dioxins, and other lovelies” is not true.
