Penny’s has been crap since they got rid of their plain pocket tee shirts a few decades ago.

I won't buy a tee or polo shirt that doesn't have a pocket. I need a place for my pens, cell phone, etc. which I don't want to put in my pants pocket. However, these are sometimes hard to find. There seems to be some sort of conspiracy against tee shirts and polo shirts with pockets

JC Penney, and some similar stores, should have awakened to a fact staring them in the face many years ago.

Some of their serious competitors, competitors that were growing instead of shrinking, were not located in malls. The malls had lost their lure. Why? Most people did not go shopping for multiple kinds of things at the same time. Teenagers went, yes to shop a little, but mostly to use the mall as a social meeting place. Serious shoppers were not shoppers looking for many different kinds of things at the same time, other than maybe at Christmas time.

The idea of the mall was that once there for one reason the shopper might see something else they did not expect to shop for, but may go in and take a look anyway. It worked, for awhile, but I think that lure was losing it’s advantage 20 years ago. Add to that the likelihood that if you went to shop for one thing at a mall store, you knew you’d usually have a longer walk from and to the car than you would with a similar store that had a standalone location. An hour at a standalone store was better than a half day at the mall. So, Target, Kohls and others did not locate in malls.

Sears and JCPenny should have learned, more than 20 years ago - an anchor store is a gift to other retailers that might not be repaid by any customer loyalty to you. So, your an anchor store is a store that sells just about everything (many departments) but outside your walls, outside your anchor are many different smaller stores, each, individually selling some of the same kind of goods one of your different departments sell. How much of similar business will come in to your anchor, and how much will avoid it and go direct to a smaller store that sells nothing but what someone is looking for. I think the many different lines sold by a Sears store were losing out to the smaller stores in the mall that the Sears store was an anchor to. If all you wanted was some jeans, why wade through a Sears instead of going directly to a Gap store?

The chains that helped build and anchor the malls could not keep the retailing benefits they believed the malls would give them. The handwriting was on the wall BEFORE the last recession.

JC Penney should have followed Target and Kohls out of the malls and made its presence closer to the shoppers. It could have crushed the up-and-coming Kohls if it had tried.

Should be noted the Penny chain is seeking a reorganization and is not going out of business.According to Detroit News, Penny’s operate 850 stores and 90,000 employees that will be affected. Also note that they will shut down some of the stores completely.
Coronavirus is the culprit!

Article asserts that “Penney joins luxury department store chain Neiman Marcus, J.Crew and Stage Stores in filing for bankruptcy reorganization.Plenty of other retailers are expected to follow.”

This is certainly not good news even as it fits into the democRat Covid 19 game plan.

Wonder just how many small businesses are shutting down? Astronomical?

Consider Carhartt for pocket T-Shirts and polos, especially when they go on sale.

Gay C. Penny’s should have closed years ago when their men’s clothes became fabulous.

Traditionally the anchor stores in enclosed malls owned the real estate under the store. Some JC Penny stores are on ground leases in malls. On the other hand, stores in strip centers are more likely leased.

So while there is some room to re-negotiate leases, that isn’t going to make much difference in the big picture.

They’ve been looking for tenants to share their headquarters facility (which is more than half empty at this point) but they probably should look at selling it and moving to cheaper space. It’s in a hot real estate sub market.

Multimillion dollar payoffs to failed business executives are like Captain Smith of the Titanic saying “Screw the women and children. The new rule is captain and ship’s officers first!” as he casts off his lifeboat with his navigator and helmsman.

Over priced

When they ran their regular half price sales, you could pick up a decent suit for a good price.

Amen. After puking, I stopped shopping there. I hope a quiet boycott helped end J C Penneys a little quicker.

They had nothing anyone under 40 wanted, as a general rule. Their online presence was a sick joke and they turned away all their older customers with GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY and no coupons or sales. Sure, they eventually rolled that back but it was too late.

I haven’t been inside a JCP (as they rebranded themselves) as a potential customer in more than a decade. The only times I’ve been there is when cutting through on my way to/from the parking lot.

Many small businesses are still rolling with curbside pickup and online sales. A lot of larger businesses that had the resources to do so but had been resisting that sort of thing pre-COVID-19 are getting what they deserve.

“But our customers don’t waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant online sales” - then your customers are in their 70s and aren’t buying crap anyway. Get over it, sell what more people want and get with the modern marketplace or fail as a business. Note that Neiman also is stuck with an old customer base for similar reasons.

Only if your store can’t or won’t adapt.

This morning, I am going to pick up some parts for my Toyota. I realized I needed them at 2am a couple days ago. I was able to go to several local dealers’ websites and determine which had the best price for the parts I needed, and place my order for local pickup all in the span of about half an hour. My parts came in this morning and I received an email to that effect. From past experience, pickup will be fast and easy and I won’t have to wait in line or run the gauntlet of salesdroids to get to the parts department. This dealership heavily leverage the internet for sales, service and parts; I’ve never been there when they weren’t very busy.

I chose local pickup since it was faster and cheaper; thing is, in order to pickup my parts this morning, I will be driving right past another Toyota dealership that refuses to do local pickup, only grudgingly has online ordering at all, and charges huge markups on parts. They have surly staff and do not handle complaints well. They promote themselves as a “friendly, local dealer” but they also publicly wonder why people don’t want to come in and shop with them and why business is so slow.

Adapt to existing conditions or die.

I’ve always hated stores and shopping and I’ve been getting groceries (mainly) delivered since about 1997 (started with “WebVan” and then Safeway.com). And I’ve been a daily Amazon shopper since they started delivering more than books (when I realize I need something—say, a flyswatter—I just click and add it. Takes 1 second).

I like to get my clothing however a different way—I go to house parties and drink wine and watch fashion presentations and try on and buy Cabi (kind of Tupperware for clothing). Another “non store” option.

I think the last time I was in a JC Penny’s or in a mall was with my mother in the 1980s.

I remember when the news used to tout the annual Christmas catalog for Neiman Marcus. In the back of the catalog, they used to have some outrageous item available that year. One year, I remember a two-person submersible which cost some astronomically-high value.
