Does the government work for us or do we work it?

“When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty.” Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

To Thomas Jefferson, the fulcrum between the people and the government they have elected was fear. He argued succinctly that the government would only respect liberty if it feared losing power. Today, the relationship between people and government is power. Does the government have the power to tell us how to make personal choices, or do we have the power to tell the government to take a hike?

Stated differently, does the government work for us or do we work for the government?

We work for government.

With the combined taxes/fees/excises/local/state/federal over 60%, they “allow” us to keep the other 40%, out of the goodness of their little hearts.

Theoretically, they work for us. At least, that’s how it started.

Realistically, it’s become us working for them.

From a Republican: “ Of course, you don’t work for the government. Look at your salary!”

From a Denmocrat: “ We make your tax laws. We print your money. We own you.”

You may be right...

Somehow, all these pin pricks (and some gashes) on our income are distributed and their mechanisms so varied, that tallying them all up is very difficult.

Total Taxation by obfuscation.

I think the question has been completely answered over the past few months.

Americans are serfs that are sometimes allowed to pretend that they have rights, when it suits the whim of government officials.

The enforcement arms are numerous, and have no problem whatsoever of completely ignoring the "law of the land", the U.S. Constitution, which has become a dead letter as swarms of government agents have swarmed across the land to regulate every single aspect of human interaction. Just try to earn a living without asking permission of government agencies to do so, sometimes multiple ones.

Reagan expressed it well. America is a country with a government not a government with a country.
