Fasting is gaining popularity among biohackers looking for an edge, but theres remarkably little information on what happens inside the body during a fast. While some research has shown that caloric restriction can increase lifespans in lab animals, and plenty of intermittent fasting enthusiasts swear it boosts their cognition and helps them lose weight, the molecular mechanisms have remained somewhat vague limited mostly to the fat-burning phenomenon of ketosis. To start filling in this knowledge gap, a small new study shows that fastings effects on human metabolism are actually much broader than previous research has shown, and intermittent fasting could have unrecognized benefits.
In a paper published in January 2019 in the journal Scientific Reports, a team of researchers at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) and Kyoto University revealed some of the effects of fasting, which go way beyond just burning fat. By analyzing the blood of four young, healthy human participants after they fasted for 34 and 58 hours whoa! the team found 42 different substances whose levels increase while a person is fasting (as well as two that go down), only 14 of which scientists had previously detected in fasting humans. That means they discovered 30 substances the human body produces in large quantities during fasting that scientists didnt know about.
The fact that the body produces all these compounds, write the researchers, indicates that fasting jumpstarts a whole lot more metabolic processes than scientists had ever realized, some of which may have significant health benefits, including antioxidative defense which may explain its supposed anti-aging effects.

So you will live longer
and be hungry a good percentage of the time.
It doesn’t hurt to go hungry every once in a while. Skip eating one day a week.
Give yourself a few days to a week on a very low-carb diet, and you aren’t really hungry anymore.
“be hungry a good percentage of the time.”
The couple of times I have fasted for spiritual reasons with my church (we use the Daniel fast) I experienced very little issues with hunger. Having said that it’s a 21 day fast so it’s not a total no eating at all fast. Just fruits, vegetables, nuts and certain grains. I have to admit certain ailments did subside noticeably. Reflux/GURD subsided quite a bit. One thing for sure though, I’m a meat eater. I could tell my system was missing something.
Never overweight and an effective servant to all.
I do a lot of fasting. The hunger is only for a little while at the beginning.
I just can’t find anything that will make me feel somewhat satiated for breakfast....two eggs just won’t do it...bacon is not my favorite although I like it once in a great while....
Eggzactly.
Grass fed hotdogs
Dont tell Nadler. Of course the glutton wouldnt listen anyway.
And don’t tell Stacey Abrams. You’ll end up like a Krispy Kreme (in her belly).
I started intermittent fasting in early Feb. I start eating at 1 pm and stop eating at 8 pm (one cup of coffee for breakfast only). It’s very easy to do and I’ve lost 8 pounds and feel great.
I also switched to a mostly Mediterranean diet—I only eat carbs at dinner (not pasta usually but I do eat white bread, white rice, potatoes), meat or fish and veggies, and a 1/2 bottle of red wine at dinner, plus a little chocolate for dessert. For lunch I eat a hard boiled egg, a little cheese or yogurt, nuts, an apple, and a piece of turkey or avocado. Or a bowl of soup.
I picked the Mediterranean diet because it fits how I like to eat anyway. That plus the mild intermittent fasting seems to “work” for me and seems healthy and is easy to do.
And I walk or do yoga an hour a day most days.
[It doesnt hurt to go hungry every once in a while. Skip eating one day a week.]
I try to do that. Some weeks I miss. Oops
Everyone is different. I don’t believe any way of eating is correct for everyone. But often, if you stick with it for awhile, your body adapts to low-carb with good results.
I used to eat oatmeal for breakfast. Then I realized that I was feeling very sluggish an hour later and for a long time after - and then hungry. I usually have two eggs and some sausage or Canadian bacon for breakfast now, and I feel fine until lunch, and often don’t even crave lunch.
Keep up the good work!
As of this morning, I’m down 34 lbs from last fall. I’ve been down as much as 40. When I get down 40 again, I’m gonna do a little diet routine that works for me (temporary). I can shave off another 15 lbs with that.
Overall, I’m down as much as 57 lbs from several years ago.
I’m on my feet a lot these days. Just have to have inserts in my tennis shoes.
Well then.....
Lent and Ramadan appear to be justified
Fasted for 40 days. Felt great. Actually way too much energy. Was walking/working out daily (10000+ steps), no snoring, deep sleep and up at 4a to start the day. Out like a light at 9p.
Not for everyone, but I needed it at the time and it was super helpful.
