STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Car thefts keep rising on Staten Island during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, continuing a trend of grand larceny auto incidents in the borough, data from the New York Police Department shows.
From April 27 to May 3, police responded to nine grand larceny auto incidents on Staten Island -- an increase of seven more thefts compared to the same period last year, the data shows.

I’d bet there is a high per capita number of “status” cars on Staten Isl.
So grand theft auto went from 2 last year to 9 this year for the same time period and this is newsworthy?
Sure, it’s a 300% increase, but really? Two to nine?
/Roll eyes.......
Residential burglaries are down 70% in our little town on the San Francisco Peninsula! I figured that the crooks are hunkered down and “sheltering in place” (God, I hate that term), but my son posited they can’t go to “work” because all the potential victims are at home. My son probably has the better explanation.
I don’t know ONE person whose car has been stolen.
But yes there are a lot of nice cars on staten island.
It’s probably low level mafia doing the thefts.
If someone stole my Challenger I would not stop going to every chop shop and gangster I know until I found out who did it.
And that would be a bad day for them.
Why anyone on this board would GAF about staten island car thefts, i’m not quite sure.
Some board #### just looking to take another shot at ANY part of NYC
ciao
Car thieves gotta eat, too.
Your son has the better explanation. In SW PA, the owners are not only home, but are mostly armed.
I wonder why this story was published as written.
They are telling us that car thefts have risen during the pandemic.
My question is, what does the pandemic have to do with car theft? Are they implying that there is a causal relationship between car theft and the pandemic, specifically on Staten Island? Are they implying that there is something unique about Staten Island relating to disease outbreaks and car theft?
Maybe I’m just confused but the whole premise of the story seems odd to me in the first place.
sheltering in place (God, I hate that term..”
I’m beginning to wince when someone says “stay safe”. Where has everybody picked that up?
I think it’s more like nobody is going to be jailed if they get caught. Now if you take your kids to the park....
” In SW PA, the owners are not only home, but are mostly armed.”
Not something you need to worry about here in the Bay Area if you’re a burglar.
[[My question is, what does the pandemic have to do with car theft?]]
It’s very obvious that they are stealing the cars ‘just incase’ they have to drive their friends to the hospital if they get the virus- Expect Deblasio to pass a law mandating that car thieves are not to be prosecuted- j/k
The thieves probably hail from a nearby island.
My son’s girlfriend’s car was recently stolen in Alameda CA. It was recovered that night all stripped.
“burglaries are down 70%”
It’s a tougher job when people are home.
Slow news day!
Social Distancing (Usually I dont even type those words), Stay Home, Stay Safe, and The New Normal are phrases that send me into orbit when I hear them.
I dont know what The New Normal is supposed to mean but, as for myself, I wont accept anything but the regular normal.
Sheltering in Place is a term that many pranksters use when they make fake EAS Nuclear Attack videos and post them on YouTube.
