Harvard's campaign for home-schooling crackdown runs up against shutdown surge

Posted on 05/08/2020 7:30:11 AM PDT by Texas Fossil

Some parents expected to keep home-schooling after coronavirus lockdown lifts

No sooner had Harvard Law School touched off a campaign for a government crackdown on home-schooling than every student in America began learning at home, thanks to the coronavirus shutdown.

And while plenty of parents would never want to repeat the experience, indications are that some may stick with it instead of sending their children back to public or private schools, setting the stage for what could be the largest single-year surge in U.S. home-schooling history.

J. Allen Weston, executive director of the National Home School Association, said the deluge of calls and emails began two months ago as families sought tips on making it through the temporary classroom closures, but lately the tenor has changed as some parents decide that home-schooling “isn’t totally out of the question.”

“In the last week, we’ve had a 10-fold increase in emails, easily,” Mr. Weston said. “Maybe as many as 40% that are contacting us for information have decided that this is going to be a permanent change in their lives.”

In addition, he said, another 20%-25% of the thousands of families that have contacted his organization are “wavering.”

“I’m guessing there are anywhere from 3%-4% of parents who have been thrust into this that are warming up to the idea to where they could seriously consider this as a lifestyle change,” he said. “They’re reaching out to organizations like ours and saying, ‘OK, if we were going to do this, how do we do this?’ “

Such a surge would run counter to the agenda put forth by Harvard law professor Elizabeth Bartholet, who called for a “presumptive ban” on home-schooling in the May-June issue of Harvard Magazine, a report based on her March 9 article in the Arizona Law Review.

Can’t indoctrinate the kids if they don’t come to class.

BtW, I saw something about now educators fear child abuse will go unnoticed. Yep, look for State appointed visits to all homes soon.

I listened yesterday to a Tom Woods podcast about Elizabeth Bartholet’s article. She sounds like a real fascist. All the typical false cliches about both the dangers and limitation of homeschooling, as well as all the unquestioned presumptions about the wonders of public education.

Public education is all over the board how it is run.

Harvard? It has long been a bastion of Leftist Liberalism.

Which is ironic. It started out as a church school.

Note: I once had a son-in-law who was a Harvard Law graduate. He was not leftist, but he was not close to my perspective. He found another woman and divorced my daughter. They have joint custody of my grandson. They live in N. VA. I’d like to get them home, here in TX.

They do NOTHING when a child is beaten on school bus, bathroom, no more than our courts do when it is reported. Good old dad hits 15 yr old DUCHENNE’S MD teen in the back of the head where it won’t show, Divorce frozen due to virus, worthless restraining order ran out when lawyer ran as DHS was called in, court councilor terrorized the teen saying she’d have him put in mental institution. Kid is smart recorded her and got her fired . DUCHENNE’S kills at a early age. Stole the Stimulus money fraudulently filed joint tax return, got $3,400 + his soon to be ex wife’s She reported to IRS WHO HAS DONE NOTHING, Stole her share of last years income tax too. Dope addict/booze, drinks with local cops, STALKING her and 2 kids, the girl is just 9. Police chief won’t do a thing to stop it. Teen steals butcher knife from kitchen draw when his mom is busy to sleep with.

2 DUI’S wrecked truck, tried to force her to give over her van, he had a older truck. Loss of job meant no money for DOPE, so tested clean, P test, not hair. He doesn’t set foot on property so she can shoot him. No permit, her dad’s 9 mm Glock.

Horror story. Unfortunately is is believable.

Bureaucrap run amuck. Long ago it would have been handled quietly locally. It would never have gone this far.

Very Sorry.

Ummm ... what you’ve described is textbook hard case ... hard cases make for bad law and big ever expanding governments.

Sorry about all the problems (we’ve got them too, what with my handicapped baby sister who can’t take care of her 46 year old self) but expecting life to not suck somewhere for someone is unrealistic.

This Covid-forced home schooling has fixed one problem stemming from PS Ed. Common core math has been shoved to the dustbin of history.

Elizabeth Bartholet, Wasserstein public interest professor of law and faculty director of the Law School’s Child Advocacy Program.
She’s a real piece of work.

This Harvard view of education and the role of parents and how children should be raised and educated is pure NAZISM.

My daughter already home-schools, but several of her friends have made comments to her about how it’s been a lot easier than they expected, and they are realizing how little actual time learning at home takes. Also how many opportunities for learning there are outside of “formal” sit down busy-work. Of course, there are also plenty on the other end of the spectrum, who can’t wait to get the kids out of their hair and back to public school (which I find a little sad).

To be fair, and from personal experience as an Aide in the early grades; teachers have to take time settling down 25-30 kids, making sure everyone has their book, getting the papers handed out, re-focusing kids who are wandering, bathroom requests, etc.

Teaching is an important job. Quality education is a subjective subject. Standardized test often don’t measure what is important.

Huge classes are hard for early education.

Most of my children’s education was in public schools. My wife was an unpaid helper in the elementary school that my children went to.

Later she was a substitute.

My children were exposed to a lot of things miss, outside of the classroom.

For a short time my son attended a private school. We never home schooled.

“They do NOTHING when a child is beaten on school bus”

Perhaps they could start with trying to figure out why any parent is SO STUPID as to put their kid on a bus that goes to a public school...given what we all now know.
