Refrigerated trucks, rented. Beeves harvested, in state certified facilities (like the ones used to harvest and process deer and elk, for instance). But-— the interstate shipping laws prevent.... regulation, regulation, regulation. The health cleanliness in processing.... of course. But much can be eradicated to both compensate the farmer and get the food out.
You forgot farmers that are plowing their crops under, but I agree. That should be a TOP priority for these trillions we're spending. The supply and transport of food is what keeps us a civilization. The "preppers" and rural farmers aside, urban and close suburban communities will denigrate into chaos.
I’ve said that we need to send a semi to a pig farm and bring them back here. You can butcher your own meat and you could just put out the word that you had market ready pigs and could sell them in a day.
We did buy 2 600 lb calves last week to put on feed and think we may get a few more.

Food from fallout shelters 60 years ago is still useable. Canned properly it would be worth a hell of a lot more that the oil reserve if it really gets ugly.

But it is not. Regulations by the hundreds, and the huge factory processors take in 10s of thousands of animals every day. Farmers raise stock with this in mind. The animals need to be out the door quickly when the animal is ready.
And have you ever seen a modern slaughterhouse/meat packer?
They take in thousands of animals a day and product ready carcasses, halves and finished products of all kinds.
The Smithfield plant in Sioux City, SD has 4,700 employees! And that’s just one plant.
The economy of scale they can do will never be picked up by hundreds or even thousands of butchers.
I applaud your idea, it’s better than killing all the stock, but I’m afraid the majority are just not going to be processed in time to allow farmers to keep feeding idle stock.
I just don’t understand this. There are just as many people in the country eating just as many meals. I understand that the restaurants are closed, but people still EAT the same amount, yes?? And the truck drivers are trucking, and the grocery stores are open. None of this makes any sense to me.
