Surgeon General Jerome Adams Tuesday doubled down on his advice against healthy people wearing face masks to protect themselves from coronavirus, saying that wearing one improperly can "actually increase your risk" of getting the disease.

A ridiculous question. Of COURSE those people should wear masks, as should elderly, and everyone in at-risk categories if they think they should.

My guess is there's a significant number of people that are at-risk. I'm sadly not surprised at the number of people walking around that appear to have severe obesity.

But if masks were proven to be effective and necessary, these threads wouldn’t even exist because there’d be no question.

LOL, there most certainly would be threads if the masks were proven to be effective and necessary. That's part of the charm of FR.

Article is over two months old.

Not sure why you posted.

Oh well.

The reason why I posted it was because the Surgeon General in March said one thing and now he is saying another. Why did is thinking change 180%.

Doc Parsley (Kirk Parsley, MD)
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIyEpdW88wakXSh0JYYHxGA

He’s been doing the COVID numbers with almost daily videos - worth checking him out. No media hysteria/political bias. He’s got a different sort of humor - told a story of going into an auto parts store, told he needed a mask. He pulled his T-shirt over his nose/mouth & was then told he could not use a shirt he was wearing. So, he took the T-shirt off (I suspect this made him bare-chested) and wrapped it around his face - that was “acceptable”; however, it made people ‘uncomfortable’. He said he has trouble with ‘authority’ and the SEALS don’t have a lot of that to deal with (he was a SEAL & eventually, a SEAL doctor).

Another ‘story’ - SEALS are notorious for not telling docs their problems because they can be sidelined and lose their jobs. He said a SEAL will come in & if you ask how they are, will say “everything is fine, doc”. Parsley said I would then ask “why is your foot all duct taped up .... and is that a bullet hole wound I see?” He also was assigned OB/Gyn for his residency (he objected, to no avail) ... said he’s got plenty of stories .... if you meet him in a bar, buy him a few beers & he’ll tell you some of them.

All that aside, he’s really good at picking apart the numbers & explaining them .... shows numbers that the media ignores & demystifies those the media/politicians are using to hype fear/panic/hysteria.

Well edify us and cite some of that “known science”.

If you would.

I see lots of people wearing bandanas like Jesse James. Aside from hiding your face if you are robbing banks, I see little benefit in a bandanna protecting from anything. My employer requires us to wear masks and issued us what we call black jock straps. Hold one up to the light and you can see many obvious small holes. It is a joke to think these will somehow filter out microscopic viruses. We laugh that they might filter out the chunks if you sneezed but not much else.

“it’s a pure medical/practical fact”

Maybe its a pure/practical fact to you, but it’s one I’m completely unaware of.

Can you help me with a link? Or, even a summary of the logic?

He knows they are stupid enough to think a mask is gonna keep them well.

The masks are dirty and trap the virus behind them. They are for show so that we can all be scared.

They wear the masks to keep blood and goo away from their faces.

I am ‘shocked’ — SHOCKED I say — he was on radio a few weeks ago and downplaying the need for masks but his explanation was that basically, if not worn properly it was useless..

OF COURSE, ‘OUR SIDE’, ran with SG says masks are useless.

Anyhoo, later that same afternoon the lead story was that the use of masks was being considered to be mandatory.

Now, again, the SG is using the same tack.

IT is time for ALL to admit that if ANYONE has some first hand info or really knows what is happening, they are not being brought forward.

AND I do include PDJT, and the TASK FORCE.

Turn that crowd loose and it is like randomly firing a shotgun.
Different answers of same question by different askers.

I realize it is impossible but ONE PERSON should be the ‘OFFICIAL’ spokesperson.

I think PDJT has gotten in over his head on this Schiff and relied too much on the two Scientists/Drs and had heaped so much praise on them that it is hard for his ‘ego’ to admit he may have been wrong about them.

He still hasn’t figured out a way to gracefully push them back in the shadows and - IMNSHO - it makes him (or will be used against him) look bad/petty to ban ‘Faust/Birks’ from the hearings.

What happens if they get subpoenaed? It can probably be blocked but then ‘they’ will claim PDJT is withholding the ‘experts’ from them.

Got to ‘trick’ both of them into ‘damning’ Clinton, Cuomo etal and the problem may ‘solve itself’.

Shirley, you jest.

MW and brain in the same paragraph is an oxymoron even if another brain is being discussed.

At the outbreak, very few people were wearing masks

I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that the percentage of people wearing masks while doing anything other than taking public transit or walking on city streets was higher in Korea, Japan, or Taiwan than it was in China before the COVID-19 outbreak.

Wearing masks is not a bad idea, but it is not what was primarily responsible for the success Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan initially had in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic.

Based on my experience the number of people wearing masks in public pre-COVID-19 would have been slightly higher in Japan than China, but was still a small enough percentage of the population that it would not have made a significant difference in virus propagation.

Simple question, do Surgeons wear Masks to protect the Patient or to protect themselves?

We all know the answer.

I did some research. Besides your oven method for killing the virus, you can steam the mask for 10 minutes. I have a perfect size pot with 2 handles that I can hang the mask across the pot. Add water, boil for 10 minutes, and then let the mask dry..

The beauty here is in the metrics' simplicity of complexity.

I don't see that. In reality Taiwan succeeded in containing COVID-19 by intensive and intrusive surveillance of their citizens and a sophisticated and rapid border security process. Since they have a national medical system they were able to link that data to each person and do things like require everyone who wanted to enter the country to have a permit texted to them on their personal cell phone which the citizen then showed to the border control agents.

The simple correlation of mask wearing data, which may or may not be accurate, to nationwide results does not imply causation. I don't want to waste time doing the math, but I would expect that in the USA the percentage ownership of deer hunting rifles would have a stronger mathematical correlation with the lack of COVID-19 deaths by county than the mask usage statistics.

In my example, rural counties with few to no deaths from COVID-19 due to their isolation and other factors would share the characteristic of having more deer rifles per capita since the residents are more likely to be hunters.

But none of us think that owning a deer rifle protects you from a virus.

In Taiwan, South Korea, and until recently in Japan the public health system was able to rapidly identify, track, and isolate people with COVID-19. It is possible that the rapid adoption of wearing masks in public places helped in that process since wearing masks should generally reduce virus transmission. The success of the efforts against COVID-19 in Taiwan, South Korea and Japan are the result of actions they took at the governmental level, not the behavioral patterns or wisdom of their populations.

Here is a paper regarding how Taiwan achieved their success.

Here Is the English language version of the Taiwanese CDC's website.

Here is the English version of the Taiwanese CDC's guidance on masks. Note that their recommendations are different from what most people think they are:

"If you have respiratory symptoms, please wear a medical-grade facemask and keep at least 1 meter away from others while talking to them."

"If you develop a cough or other respiratory symptoms, you should wear a medical face mask. When your mask is contaminated by secretions of nose or mouth, please fold it, throw it into the trash immediately, and wear a new one."

"Medical-grade face masks are mainly used for preventing the spread of disease and protect people around you. People are advised to wear medical masks when you go to see a doctor or accompany a patient; when you have symptoms of respiratory infections; and if you go out with people with weak immune systems or chronic disease. You should wash your hands frequently to protect yourself from catching illness in other situations."

"You don’t need a face mask in open spaces, including walking on the streets or doing outdoor exercises."

All of that is so funny. SEALS have to think quickly.

Even those who wear the masks incorrectly don’t blow the virus as far as without a mask. Most of the virions that travel further in the smaller particles of moisture probably deactivate or weaken very quickly after being exhaled, their envelopes deteriorating. That’s the reason for the two meter (six foot) rule and a few other precautions. On surfaces, larger moisture films or even oils might make the virions active longer, thus the precautions about what we touch.

On temperatures and humidity, notice what’s been happening in some meat processing companies. Those places are heavily air conditioned (refrigerated). Air conditioners dehumidify and cool the air to a better environment for virus endurance. On recently purchased meat at home, put the old packages in the trash (outside or in cans with lids) and simply cook it. Wash hands, utensils used on raw meat, etc.

I don't see that.

Obviously. Previous post:

...the mere fact of a population which is wise enough to wear masks during a viral outbreak will also implement any additional measures necessary. So this simple metric becomes self fulfilling and one which can reliably be counted own to produce similar results when applied by other countries or entities.

I guess you stopped reading my post before you got to the sentence:

"The success of the efforts against COVID-19 in Taiwan, South Korea and Japan are the result of actions they took at the governmental level, not the behavioral patterns or wisdom of their populations."

Taiwan, South Korea, and to some extent Japan did a better job at initial containment of COVID-19. For Taiwan at least they did it using intrusive methods not generally possible here in the USA.
