Agreed. There was an understanding that certain acts implied commitment. The “acts” may have varied by community, but everybody in the neighborhood knew when a couple had passed from flirtation to serious commitment. And to leave them alone to figure how to work it out, which they usually did for 50+ year marriages and several kids.

out of my old neighborhood of about 20 guys with Italian ancestry, no one is divorced, 1 had a kid out of wedlock and one (me) isn’t married and doesn’t have kids.
That’s a great record for this day and age.
And don’t ask. I don’t know how it happened either :) I wanted 5 kids since I was 18.
Gonna be 52 in a few weeks and I don’t even try to figure out what happened :)
