Boneless chicken is first to go scarce as coronavirus hits U.S. meat supply

Goodbye, boneless chicken.

Food retailers across North America are swapping boneless chicken legs for less popular thighs and drumsticks as a wave of shutdowns at meatpacking plants has reduced supplies of sought-after cuts.

Covid-19 infections among workers at some of the largest meat processing plants in the U.S. and Canada have reduced slaughter capacity, and in some cases the types of cuts available. Outbreaks have shut down almost a third of U.S. pork capacity and the growing wave of disruptions has spurred plans by President Donald Trump to order meat-processing plants to remain open. In Canada, Cargill Inc. has idled its beef plant in High River, Alberta, which accounts for about 40% of Canada’s processing capacity while JBS SA’s beef plant in Brooks, Alberta, is running at about half capacity.

Quebec-based Goodfood Market Corp., which delivers meals on a subscription basis, said it will be substituting its regular boneless chicken for bone-in thighs, legs and drumsticks as the poultry industry shifts away from de-boning to ramp up production.

“Poultry suppliers are still facing labor shortages and many of them are operating with less than 50% of their regular workforce,” Goodfood Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Ferrari wrote in an email to customers. “To ensure the essential supply of chicken for Canadians across the country, the poultry industry as a whole is shifting away from de-boning chicken legs to increase their production capacity.”

My wife's brother used to eat chicken every day of his life.

He loved chicken ........ sort of like Wade Boggs.

But he always wondered how "boneless chicken" could walk.

as the poultry industry shifts away from de-boning to ramp up production.

As always the actual, practical reason is buried in the story.

The only realistic and achievable goal is and always was to keep the growth in hospitalizations below system capacity so we would not crash the system.

It’s Mission Accomplished on that point.
Trump is going to end his Presidency if he lets them move the goalposts to “nobody gets sick or dies” because that’s not achievable.

The meat processing plants are ‘essential’ and never shutdown.

They closed, however, because hundreds of the workers are out sick (tested positive).

Herd immunity isn’t going to happen unless people actually GET the virus.

The idea that we would get herd immunity with absolutely no inconvenience is preposterous.

What on earth are "boneless: chicken legs? I've NEVER seen such an item sold in ANY grocery store or butcher shop in 5 different states, in my entire life? Boneless and skinless breasts....YES; legs...NEVER?

And this article says in Canada; so maybe this isn't in the USA.

So now they are going to report every single shortage as an indication of even more terror to come. Just like they did with every death in the early stages of this thing. It amazes me, but some people would just rather watch the world burn unless they get their way. I blame the teacher’s unions.

Our local grocery had plenty of whole chickens the other day. Very few packages of cut-up birds

A week ago, there wasn’t a leg or thigh to be found.

I can cut the damned things up myself
