Common heartburn drug potential treatment for the COVID-19 virus (Pepcid - Famotidine)

Is a common heartburn drug a treatment for the COVID-19 virus?

A common heartburn drug being tested by a group of New York hospitals may show promise in treating the COVID-19 virus, according to a story from ABC News.

The hospitals, which have only just made the study public, have been testing the effectiveness of famotidine, the active ingredient in over-the-counter heartburn medications like Pepcid.

Hospitals in the Northwell Health network in the New York City area have been using large doses of famotidine in IV form to treat patients critically ill with the COVID-19 virus. The 187 patients in the study group have been given daily doses of famotidine roughly nine times the dose prescribed for heartburn.

The medicine is given in combination with the drug hydroxychloroquine

No results have been announced from the study yet.

According to reports from China, famotidine appears to bind to a key enzyme in the COVID-19 virus. Researchers hope the drug will act as a “decoy,” ABC reports, keeping COVID-19 busy, preventing it from spreading throughout the body.

Let’s not clutter the market. Stick with the lysol injections.

New York clinical trial quietly tests heartburn remedy against coronavirus

A globe-trotting infectious disease doctor named Michael Callahan was the first to call attention to the drug in the United States. Callahan, who is based at Massachusetts General Hospital and has extensive connections in the biodefense world, has spent time in disease hot zones around the world, including the 2003 outbreak of another coronavirus disease, SARS, in Hong Kong. In mid-January, he was in Nanjing, China, working on an avian flu project. As the COVID-19 epidemic began to explode in Wuhan, he followed his Chinese colleagues to the increasingly desperate city.

The virus was killing as many as one out of five patients older than 80. Patients of all ages with hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were faring poorly. Callahan and his Chinese colleagues got curious about why many of the survivors tended to be poor. “Why are these elderly peasants not dying?” he asks.

In reviewing 6212 COVID-19 patient records, the doctors noticed that many survivors had been suffering from chronic heartburn and were on famotidine rather than more-expensive omeprazole (Prilosec), the medicine of choice both in the United States and among wealthier Chinese. Hospitalized COVID-19 patients on famotidine appeared to be dying at a rate of about 14% compared with 27% for those not on the drug …"

One thing won’t ever be cited as a remedy...

Abortuaries would “needlessly suffer” if birth control medication protected against the Chinese virus.

If effective, Pepcid will all of a sudden become scarce.

This basic story was posted here last night. One thing it means is that there is going to be a run on Pepsid. Good luck finding it for those who use it.

"If effective, Pepcid will all of a sudden become scarce."

It already is. There has been a shortage of famotidine for some time now.

If you’ve got reflux, the acid that you’re constantly belching up will probably kill the disease before it makes it to your lungs.

So, my Mexican Beer Virus cocktail, with aquarium cleaner, dog heartworm medicine, and birth control pills now has Pepcid in it.

The birth control pills come from a study trying to find out why 75% of patients on ventilators are men, so a couple of places in California are giving patients estrogen or progesterone.

Me too. I mean, I've never seen a guppy with the coronavirus.

I never paid much attention to Pepcid.

The stuff never helped me. Prilosec is almost another food group in my case.

I was on Zantac/ranitidine until they banned that due to cancer concerns. Switched to Pepcid recently and it works fine.

When I went on Prilosec, if I stayed on it for more than the recommended 14 days I would start getting vertigo. And if I stopped it, I would have the worst acid reflux ever.

So I guess I'm gonna have to fight for my share of what's left of Pepcid.

There have been similar anecdotals for men taking Flomax, and there are divided reports about positive and negarive effects on those taking ACE Inhibitors. I do know the docs working in the Northwell system are not fools. They have been and continue to use HCQ so this report doesn’t surprise. Whether it works...big question.

Got stung by a wasp right above the eye a few years ago. It started affecting my breathing, so I went to the ER. One of the things they gave me was Pepcid- AC. Apparently it has some anti-inflammatory useful against sting poisons.

That stuff must be some kind of miracle drug akin to aspirin.

They gave me other stuff, too, not just the Pepcid-AC.
