'Food Supply Chain Is Breaking,' Tyson Foods Chairman Says As Processing Plants Continue To Close

The chairman of Tyson Foods has issued a stark warning to Americans following the shuttering of multiple meat processing plants across the country: “The food supply chain is breaking.”

In an open letter published as a full-page ad in Sunday’s New York Times, Washington Post and Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, John H. Tyson outlined Tyson Foods’ response to the ongoing coronavirus health crisis, but hinted that further closures — not only of Tyson Foods facilities, but competitors’ facilities as well — would put stress on the nation’s food supply.

"Millions of animals – chickens, pigs and cattle – will be depopulated because of the closure of our processing facilities. The food supply chain is breaking," wrote John H. Tyson, Tyson Foods' chairman of the board.

In recent weeks, Tyson Foods has been forced to temporarily pause operations at a number of plants following outbreaks of COVID-19, or because of staffing shortages caused by the pandemic.

“In addition to meat shortages, this is a serious food waste issue,” Tyson claimed. “Farmers across the nation simply will not have anywhere to sell their livestock to be processed, when they could have fed the nation. Millions of animals – chickens, pigs and cattle – will be depopulated because of the closure of our processing facilities. The food supply chain is breaking.”

Tyson said the company had adopted several new practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at its processing facilities, including new social distancing requirements, workstation dividers, deep cleanings, and temperature

It’s going to be a hard five years. The economy has been destroyed by our response. However, we are like a guy jumping from the top of a 20 story building and yelling, as he passes the 10th floor, “so far, so good!” And the pavement is rapidly approaching.

But right now we are in the “enjoying the wind in our hair” phase. The slow motion impact will probably start in a couple of months.

Then the federal government should seize the damn plants and get things running. I’m getting very tired of this BS. That will get Tyson’s attention and incentivize them to know off the garbage.

I smell shite. None of these plant closings has any reason to be permanent. It’s a temporary thing while they decontaminate, add some safety measures like plexiglass barriers between workers, and most of all, the infected workers (99% of them) get better and go back to work.

This isn’t like the plants all burning down, or suddenly chickens going extinct. Just don’t sell the portion we were going to sell to the ChiComs, and tell them they can eat more cats and bats for the time being.

I have to admit I was surprised by the “this time it’s different” fervor here. The only explanation I can come up with is that even freepers are not immune to repeated television ad propaganda.

I don’t have TV and I don’t listen to the radio any more, so I’m immune to it because, well, I don’t see it.

These articles were written just after the signing of the Phase One deal with China. Are you suggesting Trump made a bad deal in requiring China to increase its purchases of U.S. made goods?
