Coronavirus: Has Sweden got its science right? Sweden's strategy to keep large parts of society open is widely backed by the public.

Sweden's strategy to keep large parts of society open is widely backed by the public. It has been devised by scientists and backed by government, and yet not all the country's virologists are convinced.

There is no lockdown here. Photos have been shared around the world of bars with crammed outdoor seating and long queues for waterfront ice cream kiosks, and yet it is a myth that life here goes on "as normal".

On the face of it little has shut down. But data suggests the vast majority of the population have taken to voluntary social distancing, which is the crux of Sweden's strategy to slow the spread of the virus.

Usage of public transport has dropped significantly, large numbers are working from home, and most refrained from travelling over the Easter weekend. The government has also banned gatherings of more than 50 people and visits to elderly care homes.

Around 9 in 10 Swedes say they keep at least a metre away from people at least some of the time, up from seven in 10 a month ago, according to a major survey by polling firm Novus.

How serious is Sweden's outbreak? Viewed through the eyes of the Swedish Public Health Agency, the way people have responded is one to be celebrated, albeit cautiously.

The scientists' approach has led to weeks of global debate over whether Sweden has adopted a sensible and sustainable plan, or unwittingly plunged its population into an experiment that is causing unnecessary fatalities, and could fail to keep the spread of Covid-19 under control.

In Stockholm, the epicentre of the virus so far, cases have largely plateaued, although there was a spike at the end of this week, put down partly to increased testing.

FYI: Here's a report from the BBC:

There is still space in intensive care units and a new field hospital at a former conference venue is yet to be used.

What is going on with lack of COVID-19 recoveries in Sweden? 71% of closed cases are deaths, while only 31% of closed cases are recovered.

Before getting too excited about the “Swedish model” you might want to take a look at these charts & numbers posted by FReeper DoughtyOne. Sweden’s case number & deaths have been increasing

What are the deaths per million?

Also, how dense are the populations of each of the above Scandinavian countries?

Sweden is ten million. I’m sure the others are less.

Here’s your answer about Finland.

However Sweden does it certainly won’t be worse then NYC which is at about what, 25,000 deaths? They only have about 2K now. If they have a weaker version then NYC who knows, they could be “at the top” but double digits looks like still noise. We’ll know more in several days.

The other thing to consider is this — how would Sweden fare compared to the lockdown countries IN THE LONG RUN?

Let’s say, God forbid, after summer, Covid-19 comes back with a vengeance, which countries will have LESS death and hospitalizations?

Let’s compare Sweden and Germany.

Germany 1851 cases per million-—69 deaths per million
Sweden 1800 cases per million-—217 deaths per million

I am hoping it works out ok in Sweden as I have many family and friends living there.

But if I were a resident in Europe right now, I would feel much safer in Germany.

I’ve read that anyone with a biological age (note, not chronological age) over 70 is denied any special care. And anyone with a biological age of over 60 with one comorbidity is denied care.

So if your biological age is over 60 and you have high blood pressure or diabetes, the diagnosis of covid is a death panel in and of itself. Good luck to you and may the odds be ever in your favor!
