Four Indiana men who allegedly broke into a woman's home and confined her for hours to steal her stimulus check have been charged, police said.
Paul Blankenship, Phillip Guzman and Jacob Baughman, all of Lake Station, along with Christopher Henderson, of Hobart, were taken into custody Sunday after the woman reported she had been the victim of a crime, Lake Station Police Chief James Richardson said.
They were each charged Monday with burglary with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon and burglary of a dwelling and residential break and enter, court records show.
At 5:51 a.m. Sunday, a woman went to the Lake Station Police Department and reported she was held against her will at her home for four hours by the suspects, all of whom she said she knew, according to police. The woman told police the suspects were aware she had received her stimulus check and intended to rob her.
She said she awoke when the men broke into her home around 1:30 a.m. One of the men immediately grabbed her phone to prevent her from calling 911 and another had a gun, she told police.
The men eventually left and told her not to go anywhere because they would be back, police said. Once she was sure they were gone, the woman told police she drove to the police station to report the crime. The suspects were located a short time after.

Most criminals are stupid. 400 each versus kidnapping and who knows what else. Stupid. No matter what movies and TV shows tell you.
Without a doubt, some of those checks could be taken right from the mailboxes.
Why, in tne 21st century with direct deposit, is anyone still getting checks?
You'd better. Stupid is race blind.
The money was stolen the second the bill was passed. It makes me vomit. In reality most stimulus does nothing. Getting back to work WITHOUT government interference is a panacea.
No.
Some people didn’t get a tax refund in 2018, so the IRS doesn’t have their direct deposit info.
I don’t know what happened in this story, though.
“Why, in tne 21st century with direct deposit, is anyone still getting checks?”
If that escapes you I can only image how confused you are about a lot of things.
The recourse for the victim is a stop payment of the stolen check with a new check issued for her to cash. The reckless fool that cashed the stolen check is out $1200.
Its an “Amish” thing
There are criminals in every group.
Some people just lack a conscience or something. Psychopaths, maybe.
I’ve been trying to get my bank information into the IRS, but their screwed up software won’t let it happen. They say I’m eligible, but they won’t accept the supporting information that I have entered. The problem appears to be whether I owed money or got a refund. Neither applies to me since I applied what would have been a refund to my next year’s estimated taxes. Their genius coders didn’t allow for that situation.
Now I have to worry about my physical check being stolen somewhere in the USPS.
If Obama had sons they would look like...wait. What? Never mind.
They probably brought scissors to “split” the check.
That's a shame, but not surprising. Meanwhile, the IRS has been mailing checks to deceased people.
Everything was thrown together so hastily, there were bound to be problems.
Hope it all works out for you.
If I were to guess, I'd say the guy with the mask.
Because at least he showed some foresight.
I bet there is going to be a lot of this happening.
