The Navy recommended to Defense Secretary Mark Esper that Capt. Brett Crozier be restored to command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier on Friday, according to an administration official.

Esper was not prepared to immediately accept the recommendation from Admiral Michael Gilday, the Chief of Naval Operations after being briefed on the investigation into the circumstances around Crozier's removal, telling top Navy officials he wanted more time to review their recommendations, two defense officials told CNN.

The defense officials told CNN that the Navy intended to announce its recommendation at a press conference Friday afternoon but it was canceled after Esper did not immediately endorse it.

They added that the expectation had been Esper would accept the recommendation.

Heh.

It now seems that those emails Crozier leaked to the press?

Didn't happen.

"When he fired Crozier, Modly publicly justified the move by saying the letter was sent to “20 or 30” people, something Modly called “just not acceptable.”

But a copy of the letter obtained by The Washington Post last week showed Crozier sent it to the three admirals and copied it to seven captains."

I’ve always believed Modly (or other Naval bigwig) leaked that email to the press.

This confirms it to me. First Modly lost his job. And now Crozier is maybe getting reinstated?

The military brass will do it if for no other reason than to make the Administration look bad.

Never having been awarded a medal for bravery *or* a court martial during my stellar Army "career" I'm no expert on such matters. However,I believe that whoever *leaked* the letter to the press should be subjected to very severe discipline.

I haven't seen any reports regarding who the leaker was...it may have been the Captain or someone else.

Not necessarily.Reduce him to O-5 and let him retire....*if* he was the one who leaked to the press.*That* is the only crime here....writing the letter was,IMO,not at all worthy of discipline.

As an engineering officer during my time in the Navy, we used the CasRep (sp?) reporting system for material problems. I am sure there must have been a similar classified system for the type of problem he wanted to report. He should have used that and followed the chain of command.

So the letter could have gotten to the press due to the Captain’s negligence...his failure to follow proper procedure?

One HAS to wonder just how tone deaf the Navy brass is!

Reinstating a Commanding Officer who INTENTIONALLY bypassed the Chain of Command and INTENTIONALLY leaked his letter to the press not only should NOT be reinstated, but forcibly retired!

Acting SECNAV Modly did the right and proper thing by firing Captain Crozier. He screwed up BIGLY by flying to TR and trashing Crozierm and was rightfully fired.

Not true. We now know that Modly leaked the information to the press. Not Captain Crozier.

It makes sense. Not only did Modly and others up the chain of command screw up very badly regarding the Roosevelt condition: not only did they leak the emails to the press, but Modly also flew 2400 miles to personally insult the captain in front of the world. No wonder he got fired. Deservedly so.

Captain Crozier deserves exoneration. He deserves a full reinstatement.
