3 Reasons Why States Shouldn’t Get a Congressional Bailout

Rachel Greszler / April 19, 2020

Illinois State Senate President Don Harmon sent a letter April 14 on behalf of the Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus to members of Congress requesting $40 billion in federal funds for the beleaguered state. Although the letter comes under the guise of unprecedented COVID-19 disruptions, the purposes for which Illinois and other states seek additional federal funds are anything but unprecedented. Opening the floodgates to federal taxpayer dollars to cover states’ self-imposed fiscal woes would only lead to even further fiscal recklessness. Here are three ways that additional federal funds to states won’t help fight COVID-19 and will likely hurt federal taxpayers and states’ budgets in the long-run.

10th Amendment

Same reason businesses or persons should not get federal bailouts.

If you bailout EVERYONE from this, it will happen again very soon. If there is true economic punishment for shutting down the economy, then it will NEVER happen again.

Bailout after bailout is ensuring that this nation will go bankrupt in most of our lifetimes. I’m a 30 yr veteran of finance, and we are not just steaming to bankruptcy, we are RACING towards it.

The Democrats can find a rainbow anywhere that is someone else’s money.

#1 They negotiated overly generous public employee pensions.

Let them pay for it.

The politicians are salivating over how they will circumvent the order and use the federal money to keep them in power.

Reason 1: The states need to shrink the staff and handouts.

And then they will fatuously claim it isn’t other people’s money because they too pay taxes.

Tyrants who claim that they only want to help you are the most insidious of tyrants.

Cuomo: ‘New York State Is Basically Bankrupt’
By Pamela Geller - on March 29, 2020

The highest tax state in the union. Another enormous Democrat failure. Cuomo spends our tax-dollars like a drunk sailor. He banned fracking, oil drilling, natural gas and fuel oil. And New York is a sanctuary state. Who underwrites all these illegal immigrants? We do.

I’m a New Yorker and I pray Washington does not bail out this cesspool of corruption and theft. Voters should suffer the consquences of their choices,

It’s time for responsible governance in New York. The Democrats have destroyed every big city in America. When do they pay the piper?

Cuomo is threatening to raise taxes (we are already highest in the nation) and/or slash education funding. That would be a gift. Public schools, especially in New York, a left-wing inculcation centers. Home school.

Cuomo spends our taxdollars like a drunk sailor, He has banned racking, oil drilling, banning natural gas and fuel oil Further, New York is a sanctuary state and who underwrites all this illegal immigrants. We do.

McConnell said he was against bailing out public sector unions in the Dem states. Unfortunately money is fungible. So, they will end up sending money for infrastructure which will morf into a pool of cash used to make the pension funds whole.

Blue states demand a bailout of their failed Democrat policies.

It is clearly not a sensible solution, nor is it fair, to ask the taxpayers of states that practice prudent fiscal measures to bail out the continuing proven financial activities of other states. It offers no incentive for the voters of the incompetent states to seek capable government.

Such bailouts should be conveyed with limitations along the lines of, "The State shall no longer continue its policy of ..."

It used to be referred to as "tough love".

Effectively, a bankruptcy. Bring out your debt! We’re all going to be sorry.

States need to cut the size of government and the wages and pensions.

States need to send illegal immigrants home and stop paying them to stay here.

States need to enact laws which will incentive people to work and stay in families.

We need the states to learn to restrict spending to "ESSENTIAL" gov't business!

States need to learn that employees shouldn't be able to retire at 50 or 55 with 90% of their pay!

IF they get money, they should all get the same amount per capita. Don’t reward the profligate at the expense of the frugal. Politically easy to defend.
