Las Vegas mayor slams coronavirus shutdowns of nonessential businesses as 'total insanity'

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called the closing of nonessential businesses in Nevada "total insanity" during a city council meeting on Wednesday, and pushed for state officials to speed up the recovery process before it's too late.

"This shutdown has become one of total insanity in my opinion," she said. "For there is no backup of data as to why we are shut down from the start. No plan in place, how to move through the shutdown or how even to come out of it."

Goodman, who is also a Democrat, called for the entire state to be reopened as soon as possible, to avoid further economic fallout.

"Our entire tourism and convention industry business has been shut down. It makes no sense. It makes no sense," she continued. "From my perspective, we must open our city. We must open Southern Nevada, and we must open the state of Nevada."

Goodman claimed people are capable of abiding by strict sanitary standards and should be allowed to return to work so they can begin rebuilding their lives.

"We cannot keep our heads in the sand, and think it's going to go away. We're adults with brains who can know what to do, to wash our hands, to take all precautions not to spread this disease," she explained.

"The longer we wait to do this, the more impossible it will become to recover and return to the home we all know and love," she added

I see where she’s coming from. Las Vegas is so dependent on tourism. Their local economy must be in shambles.

See hos it goes. She’s a Democrat, and her state’s governor is a Democrat. The Democrats are the ones warning us against reopening the country.

Instill and hype fear and logic and common sense go out the window.

Ask Whitmer and Cuomo why it’s safe to launch a kayak, but not a motor boat?

It’s what happens when reality smacks a rat in the face. I cannot imagine what LV is like right now. The very foundation of the city is built on vice and tourism. They must be pretty close to a total collapse.

That’s true. The whole point of Vegas is risk-taking... letting adults make their own choices even if they aren’t necessarily physically or economically healthy choices. If folks are willing to start hanging out at casinos again with full knowledge of the current situation, it’s pretty hypocritical of NV to stop them when the state was essentially built on that kind of willingness.

I think Trump may have just triggered the self-destruct sequence of the Democrat Party.

This is just what Trump is basing his strategy on. It needs to be the rats’ idea to reopen. Financially suffering rats will demand it from the rat governors they elected. LOL

But if the Republican-controlled States, like Texas, open up, and people see that working, the Democrat-controlled states will be under great pressure to also open up. That’s the beauty of Federalism, and that’s what Trump is counting on.

Now that I’ve had a chance to sleep on it I can see certain nuances in Trump’s plan.

He let Fauci and Birx basically write it and present it. Birx’ presentation was a confusing fustercluck that lost 80% of the public. But now when asked by presstitutes they’ll have to answer honestly that yes, Trump did what we advised him to do.

But, at the same time he put responsibility for enforcing the details of this plan totally on the Governors. They asked for it with their 10th. Amendment stompy-foot fit, and now they own it.

When directly asked if he would tell people not to protest Trump refused to do so. And there is every indication that they will, and that these protests will grow large and forceful.

This will force some of the recalcitrant Govs and Mayors to cave, and others to look on jealously at revived tax revenues as their own people seethe. They will turn on each other like starving rats.

The lockdown becomes self-ending when people simply refuse to obey it anymore. And the self-destruct sequence is triggered for the Dem Party.

All while Donald Trump has redistributed the political liability.

That’s risky, but upon further examination brilliant.

There would be a lot less crowding in businesses that were allowed to stay open if so many others were not closed. I have argued that whether a business should be closed should be based on risk and whether that risk can be mitigated. Risk factors should be weighed against such things as

Normal occupancy level.
Type of occupancy.
Ability to sanitize items and fixtures.
Ability to limit customer contact with merchandise.
Ability to keep customers a safe distance from each other.
Number of employees and can they be kept a safe distance from each other.
Ability to change hours of operation.

Taking all that into account would have allowed many small businesses and offices to stay open.
