Two protests are planned for the Capitol Hill area in downtown Denver on Sunday, April 19. Both are aimed at urging Governor Jared Polis to allow closed businesses to reopen, and both are touting their commitment to gather peaceably and maintain social distancing.
Called Operation Gridlock Denver, the first protest is planned for 1 p.m. on Sunday and has 1,700 interested followers on its Facebook event page. The event is being organized by members of Peace, Love, & Hippie Juice.
"Drive to the Capitol in Denver and gridlock the roads in protest to the mandatory lockdowns and violation of constitutional rights we are seeing in Colorado and across the nation. This will be a peaceful protest to #endtheshutdown"
The second protest is being held by the Libertarian Party of Colorado from 2 to 4 p.m. This one has more than 300 interested followers on its Facebook event page.
"Protest at the Capitol Sunday from 2pm to 4pm. Who will stand?
Bring your signs and face coverings!
We will be 6 apart and wearing masks for everyones safety.
Allow us to Open Everything Now! Stop punishing the poorest! Let the children eat! Hancock & Polis: Still getting paid!"
In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, Colorado has been under a stay-at-home order since March 26. It is currently set to expire April 26, but could be extended.
Likewise, the state has been under a nonessential business closure since March 16, and it is currently slated to end April 30, but could be extended.
Protestors are urging government officials to allow businesses to reopen.
A similar protest in Raleigh, North Carolina, this week was the source of controversy after the Raleigh Police Department tweeted that "protesting is a nonessential activity." The tweet drew criticism online from hundreds of commenters citing Constitutional First Amendment rights.

We are opening. Summit Sports Park is not gonna wait for permission, Bader said in the video. Summit Sports Park is not gonna wait for Dr. Fauci and wait for
Amy Acton and wait for Mike DeWine because none of them even know I exist and none of them really care.
My guess is, with everyone our of work, losing everything they have, and time on their hands, these protests are going to start getting massive! I believe these fu*king politicians need the fear of G_d put in them!
Most poignant thing in my mind that happened in Trump’s presser yesterday was that Jonathan Karl tried to get Trump to tell us not to protest and he refused to go there.
