I’d ask where the parents are but I suspect broken homes have a lot to do with this and the remaining “parent” wants to be the Facebook and local cause celebrity with the hip/unique transgender teen.

No it is not that. Schools, the government, and social workers own the kids. Have for over 30 years since it was determined by courts that schools could take kids to have abortions and other procedures without parental consent.
So parents really do not have control of the children in any way! The kids do what they are told and the common culture and the schools are telling them that this is the best way to behave. Kids really do what they are told.
Sadly I imagine a lot of this is a result of child abuse. Not always but enough to be a fairly common cause.
