The truth is Trump had no choice but to play along. It became obvious very early on they would crucify him if he didn’t. The proof of this is the attack ads laced with Trump sound bites from the time the rats are running in the swing states. He did a brilliant pivot with the shutdown and the briefings. It is the consequence of this hitting nine months out from the election.
Politically, this was very smart and should have been done earlier.
