how did any of the internal communication and decisions get to the press anyway, that doesn’t seem good.

Because Captain Crozier deliberately sent them through unsecured channels, and deliberately sent them to 22 different people, most of whom were not in the chain of command.

Also, Crozier's superior, Admiral Stuart Baker, was aboard ship at the time Crozier sent his letter.

He could have just talked to the Admiral, but he chose to be a d*ck about it instead.
