is Hydroxychlorquine and Zpack unsafe? I don’t understand why anyone is opposed.

Like, what is the downside?

(Or is it just that they don’t want to find a cure? Because Trump said this might work?)

The Z-pack does have a slight chance of causing potentially lethal heart problems in a relatively small number of people, especially those with prior cardiac conditions or in frail general health. Unfortunately, there is no test for this and the consequences are occasionally lethal. However, during normal times, the Z-pack is considered a safe later generation macro life antibiotic widely issued and prescribed for a wide variety of ailments. Doxycycline is emerging as an alternative to azithromycin for those potentially affected for COVID-19 use.

Hydroxychloroquine also can have some ugly issues. It can cause some major, often lethal cardiac issues in a tiny minority of the population. Think of it as a sort of lethal genetic allergy - don’t recall if there’s a test for that yet, but there might be.

Short version - both drugs are well known and very safe for the supermajority of the population, but for some people they’re lethal. This has been known for a long time.
