A recession requires 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. Unless the last quarter of 2019 was negative, we can’t be in recession yet.

Two consecutive quarters of negative growth is not the technical definition of recession. It’s often used as a rule of thumb. When you have jobs being lost at the current rate, it’s a recession.
