L.A. Mayor Wants 'Snitches' to Rat Out Their Neighbors... All for a 'Reward'
Townhall.com ^ | April 4, 2020 | Beth Bauman

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) is encouraging residents in his city to tattletale on their neighbors who defy his stay-at-home order. Specifically, he's targetting businesses that continue to remain open despite not being considered "essential" (at least by government standards).

“If any non-essential businesses continue to operate in violation of the stay at home order, we’re going to act to enforce the safer at home order and ensure their compliance,” Garcetti said. “You know the old expression about snitches. Well, in this case, snitches get rewards.”

“We want to thank you for turning folks in and making sure we are all safe,” the mayor said during a press conference “Your decision to stay home may mean that there’s one less person who needs a ventilator we do not have.”

Garcetti’s office has already sent the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to 144 of the more than 500 non-essential businesses that failed to follow his order. Of those, four have been sent to the city attorney’s office for misdemeanor charges.

The mayor’s team encouraged residents to submit business violations here, on the city website. It’s unclear what the so-called “rewards” will be (if anything).

The announcement comes after Garcetti formed his "Safer at Home" Business Ambassadors program last month. The program "deploys city workers and volunteers with the mayor's Crisis Response Team to businesses that appear to be out of compliance with the emergency order with a goal of securing voluntary compliance. If voluntary compliance is not achieved, the ambassadors will share information with the city attorney and LAPD for follow-up."

“To repeat for the 1000th time: Democrat/Leftists always — always overreach ... until such time as normal people realize what is going on and stop listening and stop obeying every new dictate.”

The City of Laredo Tx has an ordinance saying you can be arrested and/or ticketed for not wearing a mask in public. Or even up to 180 days in jail.

https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2020-04-02/laredo-texas-fines-residents-for-not-wearing-masks-in-public-amid-coronavirus-outbreak

And the Republican governor seems to have no problem with it.

So I guess if somebody gets tired of complying they could take on the city cops, the county sheriff, the Rangers and associated state police and the Texas National Guard.

Or they could admit that would be a stupid idea.

If I were sentenced to live in LA, I would find out the addresses of all the LA overlords and burn up the snitch line. Sort of a gentle swatting, provided the overlords don’t send out the swat teams.

The local Game Stop figured out a way to get around being shut down as non-essential. They started selling keyboards and mouses.

The other area stores didn’t do it and have been shutdown.

The dictate by the city's petty tyrant is limited in scope:
The ordinance also requires residents age 5 and older to wear "some form" of covering over their nose and mouth when entering public buildings, using public transportation, taxis and ride shares and pumping gas. Coverings can include a homemade mask, scarf, bandana or handkerchief

The city's "emergency ordinance" does not specify that a "mask" must be worn only that a mask is included in the definition of an acceptable "covering" (the members of the Laredo city council left out "burka" and are therefore obviously a bunch of racists!)

So I agree with you that "tak[ing] on the city cops" wouldn't be prudent. As it is a city ordinance I don't know what "the county sheriff, the Rangers and associated police and the Texas National Guard" have to do with the petty tyrants' fiat ... and likely don't want anything to do with it. This limitation also explains why the Republican governor doesn't want anything to do with the mayor's and city council's totalitarian wet dream.

The point of my original post is that this schumer will continue and will continue to grow in scope until it is successfully challenged. Cheers!

Well this sort of thing can backfire on the useful idiots as well.

Start watching your liberal friend’s social media accounts and prepare for rewards.

” will continue to grow in scope until it is successfully challenged”

These is no way to challenge it while it’s happening.
As a practical matter, courts are closed.

And after the fact, “success” will be rare. There’s a long legal history supporting these laws and their enforcement. If anything the legality has been enhance with each new hysteria.

Excellent points, Mariner. Goes to my early contention (which now doesn't appear quite so over-the-top) that without the legislative and judicial components of state governments operating, the executives are running amok with unbridled and unchecked power; that our Constitution, though perhaps not "suspended", is certainly not a consideration with the widely varying dictates at the state level.

(As an aside, as difficult as it is to acknowlege this, I must. Stepping back, I think Gavin Newsome of California is doing a reasonable job of balancing priorities with the restrictions associated with the virus, especially in contrast to the governors in some of the other states (e.g., New York; New Jersey; Michigan; Nevada; Oregon ... no surprise they're all Democrat/Leftists!)

Be well, my FRiend.

” I think Gavin Newsome of California is doing a reasonable job of balancing priorities with the restrictions associated with the virus”

It is a plausible argument that Newsom struck the same balance as Trump.

Formal and repeated admonition to conform, without enforcement. Thereby enlisting as much support of the people as could be reasonably expected.

More like the old Mafia Dons orders re what happens in their neighborhoods.

However, Garcetti would make a good “mini-Mussolini”. Hope he ends up (side down) lie Il Duce’ and his wife.

Hang in there Gil.
