Gunfire and blockades Wednesday again terrorized the northern Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo, but was not a threat to the border Texas city of Laredo, the citys fire chief told Border Report.
I saw the situational report come in that there was some gunfire occurring in Nuevo Laredo and I dont have any details but its happening on the other side of the river so its not impacting our community, Laredo Fire Chief Steve Landin said in a video conference call on Wednesday afternoon.
Rapid gunfire can be heard in video shot on the streets of Nuevo Laredo, just across from Laredo, and there are reports of blockades. A high-level community leader in Laredo said the situation is very dangerous and complicated and is a combination of drug cartels fighting and protests by farmers and ranchers...
This is the second time in three months that this city in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas has come under rapid gunfire. On Jan. 2, the Webb County Sheriffs Department issued an urgent warning after overnight gunfire was so rampant that it could be heard clearly from the backyards of residents in the U.S. side, where many took cover in their basements.
During a Wednesday morning public health emergency conference call which is held daily with Laredo city officials to discuss the COVID-19 situation the gunfire situation dominated the conversation, Border Report was told.

You know what would be sooo cool?
Lets import all that violence here!
After all, as soon as their feet touch American soil, they’ll become perfect American citizens just like if they were born and raised here!
/every leftist idiot.
So basically things are getting back to normal.
“but its happening on the other side of the river so its not impacting our community”
Like the air over the river is going to stop errant rounds?
This story is questionable. Nobody has a basement in South Texas.
While the Mexican side of the border is definitely a sketchy place, I think these reports are exaggerated. In January my wife and I drove through Nuevo Laredo (as we have done for years) on our way to Puerto Vallarta. There have always been crime and turf battles in Mexico. We just hear a lot more about them now due to the 24/7 internet news cycle.
I am 100% with Trump in controlling illegal immigration. But there is a lot of Mexico bashing on this site that is totally unjustified. If you have never been there, you are speaking from ignorance. There are many, many kind, friendly people in Mexico who love Americans.
“There are many, many kind, friendly people in Mexico who love Americans.”
I am with you on that - a much more laid back and easy going culture. Happier, in many ways.
But the crime situation in Mexico and Central America has gotten World-Class bad. Cartels rival the atrocities of ISIS in torturing, mutilating and displaying their victims. In per capita terms, many Mexican cities are now among the violent on Earth.
Just a few years ago, cartel crime got so bad in Nuevo Laredo, that the thoroughly corrupted local police force was disbanded, and Martial Law was imposed there. Things stabilized after Jalisco New Generation Cartel (then aligned with Shorty (El Chapo) Guzman’s Sinaloa Cartel) overcame the Los Zetas locally - but it might be that the game is back on in Nuevo Laredo.
The hard won drug and human smuggling corridors are shifting, due to wall construction and increased enforcement. This is setting the cartels back against each other for control of the best remaining routes.
We can expect to see increasing disruption of their rackets, with the associated resulting turf wars, this year and next (if President Trump is re-elected).
5 years ago they were installing signs on billboards along I35 in Texas:
Laredo is safe.com
I kid you not. No way in hell do I or have I been to Mexico recently.
I used to travel all over Mexico and Central America for work. Its been 12 since going to Mexico, been to a few Central American countries but have really curtailed those business trips. Dont miss it or need it.
