Top EU court says eastern states broke law by refusing to host refugees

BRUSSELS - The European Union’s top court ruled on Thursday that Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic had broken the law by refusing to host refugees to help ease the burden on southern states such as Greece and Italy after a surge in migrant arrivals from 2015.

The ruling underscores Europe’s bitter divisions over migration, though the three ex-communist nations face no immediate penalty as the relocation of tens of thousands of people agreed by the EU was only envisaged until 2017.

“By refusing to comply with the temporary mechanism for the relocation of applicants for international protection, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic have failed to fulfill their obligations under European Union law,” the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union said in its ruling.

The eurosceptic, nationalist governments on the EU’s eastern flank had cited national security reasons in refusing to take in any of the mostly Muslim refugees and migrants who had fled wars and poverty in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond.

Frontline states such as Italy and Greece complained angrily over the lack of European solidarity as they struggled with mass arrivals that overwhelmed their security and welfare systems.

Wealthy northern European states such as Germany also criticised the ex-communist east for refusing to help while continuing to benefit from generous EU financial aid.

More than a million people reached Europe’s shores from across the Mediterranean in 2015, catching the EU unprepared as they trekked across the continent and triggering a new wave of support in some quarters for far-right, anti-immigrant parties.

And the Eastern states will tell the court to get stuffed. So what’s next, a stern lecture?

Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic have essentially told the EU to get phuked over this so-called law. I can foresee the EU going the way of the dodo.......soon.

Temporary? That’s a good one. At least the EU court has a sense of humor. Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, take in all these Muslim invaders. But don’t worry. It will only be temporary.

The court might suggest holding back ‘funds’, in order to get compliance. The three govenrment would then hold back some ‘contributions’ to the EU ‘bucket’ to equal the pain and suffering amount. This would escalate to the point where NO funds from the three go to the EU.

The three could draft legislation to recall their representatives at this point, with some parties cooperating and some refusing. The refusing party representatives at the EU would then be given some kind of paperwork to show they have no ability represent the nation.

In simple terms....the three would just operate as a separate entity in the EU with no one there in Brussels and no EU officials welcome in the three states.

Presently, Italy isn’t that happy with the EU. Same can be said for Greece. So the three might find five or six ‘friends’ and take the EU to a whole new level of discontent.

YOu’re right. Eastern states have been telling the EU to go F themselves for some time now. They’ve got no use for the gender/identity/gayness crap the EU has been shoveling.

As a proud Polish-American, it’s gratifying to read that the land of my ancestors is standing up to EU tyranny.

And Poland is in good company with the Czechs and Hungarians on this.

What about Slovakia? Aren’t they part of a defense pact with the other three counties? I would expect the Slovaks are also taking a dim view of the cultural enrichment provided by Third World refugees.

Time for more states to leave the EU. BREXIT was a nice road map.

The Eastern bloc countries could survive funds being withheld. Italy and Greece are 2 of the PIGS that are dependent on the EU to prop their governments up. They may make noise but they aren't going anywhere unless the EU dissolves.

Same here. It is nice to see Poland standing up for their beliefs and not lettign the EU dictate what they must do.

I suppose the Brussels bureaucrats can stick their tongues out—or get drunk and curse—but Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic are right to tell them to go to hell.

So BREXIT is OK for the EU but not the US. Why?

I am not sure where you draw that conclusion from my comment. I am a believer that the US Civil war was a ‘war of northern aggression’. My rudimentary analysis of BREXIT and the US Civil War is that in a ‘union’ of individual states, not only do Westphalian states have a right to join a union but they also have the right to leave as well.

Of course, President Lincoln thought differently and used the power of force to kill hundreds of thousands of southern, white soldiers to force the Confederacy back into the Union.

So, I hope I helped you know my position and I look forward to California leaving our union soon.

Poland saved the rest of Europe in 1920 when the Red Army, led by Tukhachevsky (a good tsarist general who was falsely accused of treason and shot during the 1937 purges) were badly beaten back across the Soviet border by the Polish Army.

Apologies, sir. I try to get secession in at every opportunity but it always dissolves into “the Civil War” yadda yadda yadda. The current state of central planning is the perfect time to look forward instead of backward.
