How many people die after being infected with the novel coronavirus? Fewer than previously calculated, according to a study released Monday, but still more than die from the flu.
The research, published in the medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases, estimated that about 0.66% of those infected with the virus will die.
That coronavirus death rate, which is lower than earlier estimates, takes into account potentially milder cases that often go undiagnosed -- but it's still far higher than the 0.1% of people who are killed by the flu.
When undetected infections aren't taken into account, the Lancet study found that the coronavirus death rate was 1.38%, which is more consistent with earlier reports.
Early in March, for example, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that "if you just do the math, the math is about 2%."
But he emphasized that the number could go down, saying that "as a group it's going to depend completely on what the factor of asymptomatic cases are."
That's because death rates typically only consider reported coronavirus cases, which tend to be more severe, and thus brought to the attention of health care workers. Asymptomatic cases -- or mild cases -- may not always be counted.
In this study, researchers tried to estimate the true "infection fatality rate." In other words, out of everybody infected -- not just those sick enough to get tested -- how many people will die?
To find out, researchers looked at how widespread infections were among people repatriated to their home countries on flights from Wuhan, China.
According to the study, these people received PCR tests -- a test that would be able to identify how many travelers were shedding the virus, even if they didn't show symptoms.

Let’s see how it compares with H1N1.
An actual pandemic.
It doesn’t, now does it.
The post above you did exactly that.
Some of our fearpers should be writing for evidence based, peer reviewed journals like The Lancet.
Thats how brilliant they are.
Many places are not testing anybody who shows up with mild symptoms. Very, very common here in NC. They’re just told to go home and isolate.
The bean counters have no idea how widespread this thing is right now. That number would drastically lower the rate of death.
That’s meaningless without an accurate case figure, and no one has such a figure.
I saw that the death rate from the “usual” flu is lower this year due to the precautions being taken over CV.
Silver lining I guess.
RE: Lets see how it compares with H1N1.
An actual pandemic.
Well H1N1 was horrible and millions of people were infected — 1% to 3% of the world’s population were infected. Hundreds of thousands died.
But for some reason then, NOBODY I knew was infected then, and nobody I knew died.
Now with Covid-19, it is getting personal. Friends are sick and some have died.
The media and the swamp should be the next to be unemployed.
Death rate, from Worldometer CV site:
We don’t know how many were infected (”When you look at how many people have died, you need to look at how many people where infected, and right now we don’t know that number. So it is early to put a percentage on that.”[1][2]).
The only number currently known is how many people have died out of those who have been reported to the WHO.
It is therefore very early to make any conclusive statements about what the overall mortality rate will be for the novel coronavirus, according to the World Health Organization
Only ill with flu like symptoms tested, generally.
10% of those are hospitalized and 10% of those die.
The rate should be lower now that social distancing is in effect, plus we have a better idea of how to manage severe cases.
Duh. We have a vaccine for the seasonal flu. Apples to oranges.
During the 2017/18 flu season, we had 810,000 hospitalized and 61,000 deaths. Long way to go to approach these kinds of numbers for the Wuhan virus.
Anecdotally reverse.
How old were you and your friends?
Unlike H1N1, this is pretty only killing people with underlying issues. Diabetics, cancer patients, folks with dicky hearts or extreme age...and only those people should have been quarantined.
H1N1 was killing kids and younger adults. The difference should have been noted and factored into policy decisions but it wasn’t.
Was thinking the same thing. It would not surprise me in the least if they are lumping all flu related deaths in one big basket of deplorables. Got keep the sheeple in line.
A headline that states the truth, coming from CNN?
Satan just put on his parka.
Wonder how it is affecting gays with compromised immune systems?
“Maybe, unsequestering to come sooner, rather than originally mandated?”
Nope not a chance. Politics won’t allow it. Trump is in a vice. He has to wait until most want it. That will take the full month...at least. If Dr Fraud and Barbara go on another media blitz with more doom like they did a few days ago it could go longer.
Just heard Jersey Gov Murphy explain that his state ONLY tests symptomatics. And 38% of those test positive.
Mortality rate based on number sick not population. It’s a created statistic. It’s not wrong. It’s just a half truth.
Seasonal Flu kills 20 -60k, this will be closer to 60-100.
