(DES MOINES, Iowa) — As hospitals and nursing homes desperately search for hand sanitizer amid the coronavirus outbreak, federal regulators are preventing ethanol producers from providing millions of gallons of alcohol that could be transformed into the germ-killing mixture.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s roadblock has been frustrating the health care and ethanol industries, which have been calling for a relaxed regulation to deal with the public health care emergency.
“Hand sanitizer is a big part of our lives,” said Eric Barber, CEO of Mary Lanning Healthcare, a hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. “We can’t get any. We order it and it’s just not available.”
The problem for the ethanol industry is that most plants make food-grade ethanol, one step below the highest pharmaceutical grade. But since the plants aren’t certified to comply with stringent production standards designed to protect quality of medicines, food ingredients and dietary supplements, the FDA doesn’t want the alcohol used for a product to be applied to the skin.

So it’s OK to drink “food-grade ethanol”, but it’s not OK to put it on our skin?
I’m thinking that a face mask soaked in Ethanol would be a good way to go into the grocery store.
How dare they use food for anything other than crap fuel.
It wouldn’t. Exposed to the air in a thin amount, the alcohol would evaporate quickly.

Thankfully, my need for Everclear makes it so a liter bottle lasts quite a long time, well over a year.

I bought some “ 950 ml Bottle of 99+% Pure Isopropyl Alcohol Industrial Grade” on Amazon. Waiting for delivery. Got some aloe vera, a couple of essential oils, and some plastic squeeze bottles.
Target did have 3 ounce bottles on Tuesday this week — limit one per customer.
Then I found Purell in stock at Office Depot for an hour (I signed up for their “In Stock Alert”) and immediately ordered. Delivered in just three days. Got four 8 ounce hand pump bottles.

Yea. I think it’s only legit drinking use is what college kids still use it for. Spiking punch. I did catch a YouTube video of Irish people doing shots of American Liquor and somehow Everclear made it on their list as a shooter. I LOLed so hard watching their faces contort as their throats lit up. I don’t think they understood it’s not shot material, it’s pure mixer.
Be careful with constant skin exposure to isopropyl alcohol. While the aloe vera is supposed to help with skin irritation, there is a toxicity issue with isopropyl alcohol with constant body exposure to it.
