The risk is chance of survival vs economic pain. America will survive.
There is also the risk of economic pain if the virus is spread unchecked vs the economic pain if mitigation measures are employed. There is no avoiding economic pain due to this virus. And it's not clear what actions or non-actions result in the least pain.
It's also a matter of how much stock market damage is done. How much unemployment grows and how quickly employment recovers.
How much Monetary liquidity is provided and whether that is reversed before major inflation occurs.
And how much fiscal spending occurs and whether we get anything for that spending, what interest rates it's financed at, and the burden it becomes to the future.
This is not an existential crisis for America.
The problem isn’t so much that seniors run a high risk of contracting COVID-19. It’s that they’re more likely to end up taking up a ventilator or icu bed.
