Anyone remember their history when Memphis TN (Pop 50,000) lost five thousand citizens to Yellow fever back in 1878? That was 1 in 10 citizens who died.

How close are we to having coronavirus do the same for the nation?

Yes, I meant that.

A twist on the FRequent complaint “this thread is meaningless without pictures”.

The Dems don't seem to be in any hurry.

Pelosi and Schumer Block $1.6 Trillion Emergency Economic Bill – DOW Futures Collapse…

Posted on  by

Over the past three days a bipartisan group of senators, not leadership, constructed a $1.6 Trillion emergency aid package to rescue the U.S. economy and American workers.  The package had the support of Mitch McConnell.   However, at the last minute House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, having returned from her House recess vacation sipping cocktails poolside, instructed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to crush the senate effort.

Power hungry Pelosi sees an opportunity to use the looming economic crisis as leverage for selecting winners & losers amid the K-Street lobbying community.  Donors for Democrats will be rewarded; supporters of Republicans, not-so-much.  This is DC at it’s worst and Pelosi isn’t going to lose another opportunity.  It’s the same process she used in ’08/’09.

“Twice in one lifetime… How blessed am I?”

Senator Schumer did as he was instructed.  The relief bill did not pass cloture (60 votes needed), and the three-day effort collapsed.  Immediately the DOW futures dropped 5%.

WASHINGTON DC – “I want everybody to fully understand if we aren’t able to act tomorrow, it will be because of our colleagues on the other side continuing to dicker when the country expects us to come together and address the problem,” McConnell said on the floor. He added that over the last 48 hours there were bipartisan discussions among “regular members of the Senate, not in the Leadership office, not in the speaker’s office for goodness sakes.”

“She’s the Speaker of the House, not the Speaker of the Senate,” McConnell added. “We were doing just fine until that intervention.”  (more)

There are two main points Pelosi is targeting.  First, because COVID-19 creates a MASSIVE SPENDING opportunity, Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to include the elimination of college debt, literally wipe out student loans – which ironically and intentionally were created under Obamacare, in the coronavirus bill.

This move has nothing to do with the economic impacts of coronavirus, but it allows: (a) a political win to get the Bernie AOC crowd behind the Democrat candidate; and (b) will allow more government funding to ideological college interests by wiping out the debt problem.

Secondly, Speaker Pelosi wants unilateral control over which companies will receive any financial assistance or loans to survive the crisis.

As was the case with the 2008 Bank Bailouts, ARRA (stimulus plan) and Auto-Bailout of 2009,  Pelosi wants control to select companies for assistance that are owned and operated by Democrat donors, and scuttle any businesses or corporations who are led by republican donors.   This was a big part of Obama’s stimulus program and GM bailout scheme.

WASHINGTON DC – Two ugly truths about any epic economic crisis are that not all businesses will survive, and government interventions help determine which businesses will survive.

As coronavirus crushes the economy, Washington policymakers are scrambling to figure out who to bail out, a responsibility that one veteran of the 2008 financial rescue morbidly but accurately compared to the frantic triage work that doctors are currently doing in overcrowded Italian hospitals.

[…] As Congress rushes to assemble an enormous stimulus package to try to slow the freefall or at least pad the landing, it’s becoming clear that a lot of federal dollars will be sent straight to American taxpayers, but also that a lot of federal dollars will go straight to the companies that employ them. Washington’s last epic bailout, the $700 billion Wall Street rescue of 2008, was wildly unpopular but ultimately quite successful—and while a financial panic is a different kind of crisis than a viral pandemic, it has some lessons for today about when companies should get help and how that help should be delivered. (read more)

The difference between Nancy’s prior exploits in 2008 /2009 and today is that previously she had President Obama to support all of her political schemes.  Now she could be up against President Trump who might use his considerable platform to call attention to the partisan spending….  Key word “could”.

Yup.  We’re going back to the future and it’s politics.  Democrats don’t give a damn about what happens with the economy because Donald Trump is George Bush and will be forced to own the economic collapse he self-created.   So there’s no pressure on the actual severity of the collapse… Also given the political damage being inflicted on the White House, there’s no urgency for Nancy…   There is only upside for Pelosi in choosing the winners while she knows the media will never call her out on it.

If all this seems painfully familiar to you…. yes, we’ve been here and done all this a little more than a decade ago.  Here we go again….

Enough of these bullshit projections. Where are the dead bodies? For example, I project that 30 million Americans will have the common cold. The number of infections is not very relevant. The issue is how many people are going to die from having colds? That is the hoax. And where are the hospitals that are being overrun? We are basically shutting down our economy based on a virus that will be less deadly than the flu.

at least 1 in 5 Americans will be under orders to stay home in the coming days, and more states are expected to follow suit.

Sorry, numnutts, without suspending the Constitution and declaring martial law, that's just more worthless rhetoric.

Coronavirus Could Overwhelm U.S. Without Urgent Action, ... some 650,000 people might become infected in the next two months.

What percentage of those 650k will be hospitalized? I ask because ...

The CDC says that between Oct. 1, 2019 and Feb. 1, 2020 between 22,000 and 55,000 Americans died of seasonal influenza.

That is in a 123 day period.

Take the low figure: 22,000/123 = 179 people dying each day.

Take the high figure: 55,000/123 = 447 people dying each day.

High figure or low, why didn't that number of critical patients overwhelm the health care system? Those numbers don't even take into account the number of patients who would have been in critical condition but recovered.

Do they just not bother to hospitalize people who are dying from influenza? Is that it?

"at least 1 in 5 Americans will be under orders to stay home in the coming days, and more states are expected to follow suit."

Wait! Wut? 320m/5 = 64m. 64 million Americans will be under orders to stay home? What happened to the "650 thousand infected in the next two months" in the first sentence of the article? Or do 97 people have to stay at home for every one person infected?

Just asking for a friend who doesn't trust the NY Times.

Such pretty graphs.

From the Johns Hopkins site: Without scrolling down it shows the 13 countries with the most cases and 10 of those 13 show more people recovered than died, while 3 of 13 show very few recovered. The three with the fewest reported recoveries are the USA, UK, and the Netherlands. Hmmm. The USA recovered numbers are way out of whack with those of Italy, Spain, France, and Germany. They’re also out of whack with China and Iran but I don’t put much stock in those anyway.

As of this writing, only 1.3% of those who have contracted the disease in the USA have died.

Wow! Good thinking. To take your idea a step further:
650,000 cases at a 3% death rate is 19,500 deaths.
That’s 320 per day over two months, right between your high and low figures.

Unless hospital stay is a lot longer for Wuhan virus than for common flu, or there is some other variable we are not considering; 650,000 would seem to be manageable.

according to estimates, between 61,000 to 80,000 Americans died during the 2017-2018 season, the latter being the highest death toll in 40 years. During that 2017-2018 season, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was at or above the epidemic threshold for 16 consecutive weeks. Nationally, mortality attributed to P&I exceeded 10.0% for four consecutive weeks, peaking at 10.8% during the week ending January 20, 2018, (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2017-2018.htm) with older Americans dying at a rate of 169 Americans a day, or seven people per hour. (https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2018/older-flu-deaths-rising.html

Meanwhile the Guardian states that an est. 80% of the infected need no outside medical care, while the NY Times opines that the United States may already have 100,000 infected citizens — nobody knows.

Fivethirtyeight.com reports that "the most recent survey, taken on March 16 and 17, found that, as a group, the experts think that as of March 15, only 12 percent of infections in the U.S. had been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."..they expect approximately 200,000 deaths in the U.S. by the end of the year.

Those 2017-2018 figures just reinforce my question.
Why wasn’t the health care system overwhelmed by that?
Those numbers are huge.

As of this writing, only 1.3% of those who have contracted the disease in the USA have died.

That is very much inaccurate, since you are referring to death rates among those who have been tested and found to be infected, which ignores that estimated majority of infected who have not been tested.

the Guardian states that an est. 80% of the infected need no outside medical care, while the NY Times opines that the United States may already have 100,000 infected citizens — nobody knows.

Fivethirtyeight.com reports that "the most recent survey, taken on March 16 and 17, found that, as a group, the experts think that as of March 15, only 12 percent of infections in the U.S. had been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

And as concerns the death rate in NY, (now 117 deaths out of 15,793 cases) NYC is Only Testing for COVID-19 in Patients Needing Hospitalization(https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nyc-only-testing-for-covid-19-in-patients-needing-hospitalization/2336641/).

A figure on how many drunk drivers there are which is from on how how many fail a breathalyzer test is not an accurate number of the total.
