As a Republican candidate for the Texas Supreme Court, Don R. Willett flaunted his uncompromising conservatism, boasting of endorsements from groups with pro-life, pro-faith, pro-family credentials.
I intend to build such a fiercely conservative record on the court that I will be unconfirmable for any future federal judicial post and proudly so, a Republican rival quoted him telling party leaders.
Judge Willett served a dozen years on the Texas bench. But rather than disqualifying him, his record there propelled him to the very job he had deemed beyond reach. President Trump nominated him to a federal appeals court, and Republicans in the Senate narrowly confirmed him on a party-line vote.
As Mr. Trump seeks re-election, his rightward overhaul of the federal judiciary in particular, the highly influential appeals courts has been invoked as one of his most enduring accomplishments. While individual nominees have drawn scrutiny, The New York Times conducted a deep examination of all 51 new appellate judges to obtain a collective portrait of the Trump-populated bench.
The review shows that the Trump class of appellate judges, much like the president himself, breaks significantly with the norms set by his Democratic and Republican predecessors, Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
The lifetime appointees who make up more than a quarter of the entire appellate bench were more openly engaged in causes important to Republicans, such as opposition to gay marriage and to government funding for abortion.
They more typically held a political post in the federal government and donated money to political candidates and causes. Just four had no discernible political activity in their past, and several were confirmed in spite of an unfavorable rating from the American Bar Association

Some good news!
It took 4 idiots to write this rubbish.
Oh the humanity, pass the popcorn. This is long lasting, thank you president Trump, thank you
Love the way they try to pretend Crater, Clinton and Obama didnt appoint Leftist ideologues.
Oh and Trump still hasnt appointed as many Appellate Court judges as Obama did.
As the community organizer president of dirty name said,
“ Elections have consequences.”
We had to live with the consequences of weaponization of the CIA, NSC, NSA, FBI and IRS against The People and a populist duly elected President. So far without any justice on the scale of whichi crimes were prerpetrated against The People.
And this f**king rubes Rebecca R. Ruiz, Robert Gebeloff, Steve Eder and Ben Protess want us to think that the confirmation of a whole new generation who DO NOT legislate from the bench is motivated purely by political self interests?
No you effing wing nuts at the Slimes, appointing those judges assures that America will continue as a CONSTITUTIONAL Republic, not a draconian socialist totalitarian state ruled by a class of commie autocrats who derogate all wealth and authority to themselves via seizure and taxation.
TANK YOU EFFING NEW YORK SLIMERS!
They cheered when Bill Clinton and Obama packed the court with left wing activist pretending to be judges (example: Sotomayer and Kagen).
The only good thing about that rag sheet is partisans will know who to liquidate when the real revolution starts. spit.
As far as judges ho, I doubt if there is any Republican President that has had a better track record.
It isn't ideology, left vs right. It's rule of law. Wrong vs right. The left can still have their way. They just need to pass laws that pass Constitutional muster.
Four more years! Four more years!
I guess it takes four NY Slimes Reporters to come up with piece. No doubt a lot of downtime for group hugs to get through it.
Sure, but they did give the chick top billing (if its okay for me to assume Rebecca identifies as a chick)
“It took 4 idiots to write this rubbish.”
Seems to be happening more and more.
Group projects have been a big thing in our schools for some. Must be so in our colleges, too. Helps the inadequate pass (on the shoulders of the successful).
Maybe in the press, it also spreads out liability?
Boo hoo. A politicized Leftist court has changed our country for the worse in the past 40 years of their legislating from the bench. Now, these enemies of our founding values are hyperventilating about Pres. Trumps judicial appointments. They must be disappointed that ifhe succeeds, they wont be able to abolish the Christian faith, heterosexual marriage, and the institution of pedophile rights.
Giving us a judiciary that works how it is supposed to work is one of the best things our president has done for this country.
Activism is a cancer in the federal judiciary, but the heart of it is the unconstitutional nationwide injunctions that they hand out like candy, particularly in the Northern District of California and the District of Hawaii. Justice Thomas has signaled his concern over this issue and hopefully theyll deal with it.
It took FOUR ADULTS to write this.
... in other words, they did a simple word search of the constitution and could not find the word abortion...
