I am not so sure that people afraid of a pandemic are really any worse than people who come unglued at empty store shelves.
I do think that this harmless episode with TP is showing everyone how thin the veneer of our “civilized” standard of living is. The “machines” of production and distribution have become mighty thin, being allowed to atrophy to the minimum of support.

Considering the nature of SK’s particular problem, they are actually doing pretty well. Last I heard they were keeping it pretty well confined to Daegu where that odd religious org was effectively encouraging Typhoid Marys.
We’re pooping the same amount as before so the demand for TP is unchanged. What is going on is panic buying, not because anyone needs more TP than usual but because they see others panic buying and figure they should too because the others must be smarter and know something they don’t, so they jump in and panic-buy too.
The TP factories make more all the time and the temporary surge will abate when everyone has a closed full of TP at home and no longer believes their butts are at risk of being chaffed by corn cobs or whatever.
Hand sanitizer and masks are a different situation because there has been a real surge in usage and they will be be in short supply until production is ramped up. But after the coronavirus panic has subsided, it will follow the same demand curve as people go back to their slovenly ways and usage of sanitizer and wearing of masks reverts to previous levels. Then some folks who were hired last week to work 3rd shift at Purell will be laid off.
