Texas Gov. Abbott Declares Statewide Emergency Over Coronavirus Pandemic

Dozens have tested positive in Texas for COVID-19

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a statewide emergency Friday over the new coronavirus pandemic.

He also announced that San Antonio will be the first city in the state to have a “drive-thru” testing facility for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

He said the new testing location could open as early as Friday. It isn’t immediately clear how many people could be tested.

As of the Friday afternoon press conference, Abbott said at least 39 people in the state have tested positive (not including the 11 confirmed cases among American evacuees at JBSA-Lackland). He said 220 Texans have been tested for the virus so far and 75 others are being tested currently.

The announcement comes hours after San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg extended the local public health emergency for the city, which prohibits public and private gatherings among more than 500 people.

Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) Chief Nim Kidd, and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Commissioner John Hellerstedt, MD, are also expected to speak.

COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new virus, stands for coronavirus disease 2019. The disease first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China, but spread around the world in early 2020, causing the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic in March.

Good luck, Texas!

Isn’t it hot enough down there to kill this yet?

It was in the eighties in OK. yesterday. I received pics of my great-grands in shorts and tee-shirts.

The choke collar is tightening around every politician’s neck now. It’s pathetic, frankly.

Maybe an early, very warm spring will take this thing out in the Southern states.

LOL....that’s a fallacy. Ask the folks in Brazil, where temps have averaged in the 80ºs and confirmed cases have doubled.

Did you notice that the cruise ships who took more nothern routes had a better virus record than those who took the southern routes with more “pleasant” temperature routes. Also consider that colder temperatures kill bacteria and viruses.(That’s why we refrigerate food). I am no MD, but temperature changes has the greatest influence on the amount of water that can be retained in a pound of air(humidity) and living organisms need water to survive.

Did warm weather stop polio? Not all viruses die off in warm weather.
