A U.S. Marine assigned to Fort Belvoir, Va., tested positive for the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, on Saturday, making him the first Marine to contract the disease and the third American service member to become infected.

Virginia Gov. Northam tweeted about the recent updates, reminding Virginians to take basic health precautions.
“We are working closely with federal, military, and local partners to respond to a COVID-19 case at Ft. Belvoir. The risk to Virginians remains low, but please continue to stay aware and take basic health precautions.”
Ralph Northam (@GovernorVA) March 8, 2020
Public health officials report that the risk of the virus spreading in Virginia is low.
Virginia Department of Health statement. . .
Wishing a fellow military service member of luck (and the family and best friends) for a good recovery.
The high honor of serving our country is enough to already win praise be safe
Barracks life is conducive to sharing illnesses. Stay well guys!Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Are Marines still diplomatic pouch carriers?
Marine Corps Base Quantico reactions:
For March 9, Marine Corps Base Quantico Operating Status is Code Yellow. The Base is open on time. Reasonable delays for reporting to work are excused. Unscheduled leave is authorized. Mission Essential personnel are expected to report to work. Personnel should contact their chain of command for specific command/activity guidance or direction.
MCB Quantico had a Marine resident test positive for the virus, who was hospitalized, but is improving. Risk of exposure to virus remains low.
Family members and personnel who were in close contact have been identified and do not show symptoms.
MCBQ continues to monitor the situation and
coordinate efforts with MCBQ medical officials and Fort Belvoir Hospital.
In coordination with MCBQ tenant commands, DODEA schools, MCCS, and Security Battalion, the following measures will be implemented starting Monday, March 9:
-Condition Yellow: to allow liberal leave. Up to individuals commands on manning.
-DoDEA Schools: closed for thorough cleaning until March 11 as preventative measure.
-CDC/Youth Center: Child and Youth Facilities will be conducting extra cleaning procedures as a precautionary measure to protect the health and welfare of the children and child care providers. If a child is experiencing
any illness, they be kept home and contact medical personnel as required.
-Gym: has been cleaned. Patrons are reminded to wipe down equipment after use.
-ID Cards: scanned while the individual retains possession to limit contact.
-Training/Scheduled Events: conduct as scheduled.
individual measures: Wash hands; avoid touching face, clean surfaces including phone and keyboards; stay home if sick.
MCBQ will continue to monitor the situation and publish updates as required.
Do not let Virginia Gov. Northam deal with our Marines like he deals with our babies:
“So in this particular example, if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen,” Northam, a pediatric neurosurgeon, told Washington radio station WTOP. “The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
“The Marine recently returned from overseas where he was on official business.”
So he didn’t get it here.
Where did he return from. What was he doing? Who was he in contact with?
From Italy. He was there for work.
He is stationed at Fort Belvoir.
Did this article say he had been in Italy? It seemed just say “overseas”.
Apparently a soldier in Kuwait may have got it on a vacation in Italy.
He was in Italy. I cant remember where I read this.
FYI- I live in Virginia so I am following the cases reported here.
I think Laz has it. In fact, I’m pretty sure Laz has it. He has to. There’s just too many Asian girls here for him not to.
I may need to take back the part about Italy. I cant seem to find any reference that says that.
Apparently, there is someone from the Navy who has been diagnosed with the virus, but he is in Naples.
And another person in Fairfax City. According to the article, they knew it Feb. 28th, but didn’t report it until today.
All right then. Let’s disband the USMC and close Fort Belvoir permanently.
Isn’t that the proper overreaction to this latest in the MSM’s non-stop fear-mongering campaign? Well, the campaign will continue until there’s a Democrat in the White House...
Uh-oh... de-nile can be lethal [Nile cruise]
LOL! I saw what you did there. Those cruises are becoming deadly. I think that idea has come and gone.
FYIthe infected Marine is reported to have been in Ethiopia.
No cases have yet been reported in that country.
Would love t.o know what airports he travelled through on the way home.
