WebMD is a little behind the curveball. A few weeks ago there was a link on FR to an article on a Chinese study a couple(?) years back where the researchers discovered 500 different coronaviruses in bats from a cave in China. The researchers thought they had only scratched the surface. They also found antibodies to one of those coronaviruses in local villagers, but found no actively infected people at the time.
(500 sounds like a suspiciously “round” number, but maybe the researchers stopped there having proven their hunch.)
Now, I do have a question: Do coronavirus colds present significantly different symptoms than rhinovirus colds?
There are differences. Rhinovirous colds are a little more intense on the discomfort scale and the season is a little longer, spring through fall. So these are the colds that are the warmer weather variety that are responsible for 10-40% of colds.
Coronavirus colds are usually a little milder with a shorter season of winter early spring time frame. These are the colder weather variety that are about 20% of colds.
