Following a tumultuous four or five months on Capitol Hill where acrimony greatly outpaced civility during the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump Republican Congressman Jim Jordan believes lawmakers can put their differences aside and produce meaningful legislation before the year is over.
Jordan, who represents Ohios 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, met with the editorial board of The Lima News a sister newspaper of the Sidney Daily News on Friday before serving as the guest speaker at the monthly Allen County Republican Party luncheon.
Jordan said productive talks are currently being held on legislative proposals in the House, including the re-authorization of FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court) Act and others.
Were also working with Democrats on basic legislation to study how facial recognition technology is being used by the federal government. Quite simply, we want no expansion in the use of that technology. Our concern is that the federal government not be allowed to go into a Trump rally or a (Bernie) Sanders rally and figure out whos there.
But is it possible for Republicans and Democrats to work together following months of partisan and rancorous impeachment battles? Jordan believes finding common ground is possible.
You just focus on being consistent in doing what you told the voters you were gonna do, and if its for the good of the country then you work with whoever you can and do what you have to do, the Republican lawmaker said.
But I would argue its not conservatives who have been polarizing its the left. Todays left applauds Colin Kaepernick when he refuses to stand for the national anthem and they embrace Gov. (Mario) Cuomo when he says as governor of New York that America was never that great. They cheered (California congresswoman) Maxine Waters when she went on her rant and said that if you see anyone in the Trump cabinet you should push back and tell them theyre not welcome anywhere. That is dangerous, and I would argue its the left thats creating the polarization. Its not healthy, Jordan said.
During a speech late last year to Allen County GOP, however, Jordan seemingly attempted to drive a wedge between Republicans and Democrats at every turn by using phrases such as us and them in discussing the political process. The congressman on Friday stayed true to form, repeating that they created the hostility that prevails in the country, a criticism aimed directly at Democrats.
I wish it wasnt that polarizing, but when Maxine Waters says, in essence, that Jim Jordan isnt welcome in the country any more, you have to debate that; and you have to win, said the congressman. This in my judgment is an attack on the fundamental principles that make our country so special. So you cant just say, Oh, well all get along even though you did that. I dont see how you do that.
Jordan touched on several other topics during his visit with the newspapers editorial board on Friday:
Guns
Less than six weeks after three men were shot and killed in downtown Lima, Jordan stayed consistent in his support of the constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
Enforce the laws that are on the books. The last thing we need to do is take away peoples Second Amendment liberties. Law abiding citizens have a right to firearms, and we should not be curtailing those rights, Jordan said.
And these Red Flag laws that are being proposed are dangerous to fundamental liberties in this country. Weve got to be so against that kind of legislation. Im very nervous about that.
Afghanistan
Weve been in Afghanistan for what, 18-19 years? At some point we need to bring home as many of our troops as we can. I think the presidents position on this is exactly right. The president said that we cant be sending troops all over the world, but we also have to have a strong defense to deter aggression from bad people. And when somebody does something really bad, were gonna kick em in the teeth.
I think youre gonna see a smaller presence in Afghanistan, which is appropriate.
Trumps re-election
I feel very good about President Trumps chances of being re-elected. I think hes gonna win. I dont see any way the Democrats are going to beat Donald Trump. Hes cut taxes, hes reduced regulations, job numbers are up, lowest unemployment in 50 years and wages are up.
Hes gonna win and were gonna have another great four years under President Trumps leadership because so many people appreciate that this president is doing things he said hed do. There is no way the Democrats are gonna beat him.
Jordan, 56, has represented Ohios 4th district, which includes Lima, in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2007.
Three Democrats have filed nominating petitions to unseat Jordan. The winner of the Democrat primary on March 17 will face Jordan in the fall.
He is 100% correct. The left has run the most vitriolic, hateful rhetorical campaign I have ever seen. It started with Obama calling people “bitter people clinging to guns and bibles”; and escalated from there to Hillary calling half the country “Deplorables” (which, btw, is an adjective not a noun she used it incorrectly) and then of course everyone is some kind of -phobe or -ist and some people can tell that you’re a -phobe or -ist just by looking at you or knowing who you voted for.
Hillary’s 2016 campaign was so hateful and low, and dirty in that on top of her constant smears of sexism, racism, hispaniphobia etc they were actively weaponizing our intelligence services and courts and foreign countries to undermine Trump’s campaign.
And I’m really understating the scope of it all.
I heard my local Congressman speak last night (Republican). It was to a non-partisan organization so he refrained from being too political, but he lamented the divisiveness in Congress now. He would like to see "Reagan-O'Neill clubs" referring to the way that President Reagan and Tip O'Neill would fight it out over political issues but then have drinks together.
Trump was the only Republican who refused to play by the media’s rules that Dems can attack and Republicans can’t.
Yet, Reagan still gave Tipp that “half a loaf” they quarreled over and today the “progressives” keep coming after the other half. That’s what this fight is over.
Enough!
For once we do t get that both sides are to blame crap. Theyre a little too heavy with rabid dogs on the other side for us to tolerate such a contention
You are right, it has been brewing for a long time. The left generally agitates more. Everyone is a ‘Hitler’ to some of them, the Godwin’s law curses them. But at risk of violating it myself, when you start to call people “irredeemable” and “deplorable” you start to sound a lot like Goebbels.
One interesting side-effect is that conservatism is the new counter-culture.
Both sides are definitely not to blame. When you are sitting with a friend having a beer and someone assaults you from behind because you are wearing a red hat, it’s not the beer drinker’s fault. When you sit with your wife having dinner and someone lurches into your table and throws your food out the door, it is not the diners’ fault. When someone spits in your face for walking into a restaurant, it is not the walker’s fault. When you are eating a quiet meal with friends and a crowd following Maxine Waters’ advice gathers around and verbally assaults you, it is not your fault. When you are falsely accused of drugging and sexually assaulting dozens of women because you were seen with a red cup near the bunch bowl, it is not the cup bearer’s fault. When you write a nasty letter to the USSC threatening them if they take up a case, it is not the court’s fault. When someone is playing softball with friends and colleagues and a sniper shoots you, it is not the softball player’s fault. I could go on and on... too many instances to cite. The leadership on the left is hateful and they intentionally agitate people towards anger and violence with lies and distortions.
Damn straight. And both Comcast and Disney play a significant role.
In a sane world would a mediocrity like Joe Biden be seriously considered for President of the United States (quite apart from the incidents which suggest that he is getting dementia)? No accomplishments in half-a-century in politics (except to make members of his family rich), yet upwards of 40% of the public would be happy to vote for him in November if he is the nominee.
